Thats... the point. Of video games. To waste time. Preferably in an enjoyable manner.
Also my co-op buddy still often messes up and dies to him, so I guess he's doing his job :D
New players can choose to skip him if they're having too much trouble, so they aren't forced to die to him. Or they can tough it out and learn his patterns for future runs.
Experienced players also have the option to skip him, if they just don't care about fighting him for the marginal reward. Or they can skip him if they're trying to get the speedlunky achievement. OR if they're low on bombs and health, but don't want to restart, killing him is a very valuable option.
First boss might be easy, but the levels to get to him are not - what happened? 2 separate designers? Why have very difficult levels (those poxy moles and so many other items that badly want to kill you dead) and then stupidly simple, pointless boss? There's no boss at the end of the jungle or volcana....just seems like it was a bad idea that Derek never got called on, or advised to bin. Should have been and he should - it's silly/pointless. The first levels of Spelunky 1 had no boss, and were better for it.
But that's the exact point - there's no difficulty/challenge in killing him whatsoever - sure you can mistime a hop onto the ladder(s) to avoid him, but that almost never happens - therefore (without actual jeopardy), there is no point to him - big giant WTF.....also, don't know if it's just me, but the Dwelling seems to have gotten more difficult again...perhaps not up to original-level, but seems much harder than yesterday......getting waaaaaaaaaaaay more dark-levels, and more damned moles again. Inches away from uninstalling (for what will be the 4th time...in 2 weeks).
that is actually a very enlightened view
