Quillback is a waste of time
Hes not challenging at all and its just a gimmick in order to choose which way to go. Having 1-4 being basically the same everytime just to force Quillback there hurts the beginning of the game. Either just remove him completely or making him more challenging with the chance for a better drop. A bomb bag while good in the first game is basically nothing when money is so abundant.

I used to hate 1-4 but I've learnt to speedrun the area just cook a bomb as he rolls and accept easy bombs and health cause you might need it later to access the black market for instance.

The whole game is a waste of time.

Thats... the point. Of video games. To waste time. Preferably in an enjoyable manner.

I love Quillback. Brilliant boss design given Spelunky's boss limitations.

In my opinion Quillback is designed quite well. Skip him if you're in a hurry, or kill him if you want a cooked turkey and bombs.
Also my co-op buddy still often messes up and dies to him, so I guess he's doing his job :D

You have to realize how limited Spelunky bosses are. You may arrive with anything from stick bombs and a shotgun to just a whip. You may have 20 hp or just 1. And they have to accommodate all of that. Quillback gives that flexibility, from just opening the way, to beating him, to over-attacking him and blowing up his bombs.

So, the very first boss in a game is easy? Shocking. ;)

New players already struggle enough with the Dwelling, if you haven't noticed by now. I think he's well designed for all players in mind, actually.

New players can choose to skip him if they're having too much trouble, so they aren't forced to die to him. Or they can tough it out and learn his patterns for future runs.

Experienced players also have the option to skip him, if they just don't care about fighting him for the marginal reward. Or they can skip him if they're trying to get the speedlunky achievement. OR if they're low on bombs and health, but don't want to restart, killing him is a very valuable option.

Throw anything at him and he'll immediately roll.

Completely agree. Adds/brings nothing to the game. The level up that point (even the patched version) is difficult - but killing him is stupidly easy....so what's the point?

First boss might be easy, but the levels to get to him are not - what happened? 2 separate designers? Why have very difficult levels (those poxy moles and so many other items that badly want to kill you dead) and then stupidly simple, pointless boss? There's no boss at the end of the jungle or volcana....just seems like it was a bad idea that Derek never got called on, or advised to bin. Should have been and he should - it's silly/pointless. The first levels of Spelunky 1 had no boss, and were better for it.

it also gets repetitive pretty fast, its a roguelike(lite) and having same level this early is not fun

I found the advantage of the pitchers mitt there. Once he rolled off-screen, I just started picking up rocks and skulls and whipping them at him, one after another. He was dead before he knew it.

But that's the exact point - there's no difficulty/challenge in killing him whatsoever - sure you can mistime a hop onto the ladder(s) to avoid him, but that almost never happens - therefore (without actual jeopardy), there is no point to him - big giant WTF.....also, don't know if it's just me, but the Dwelling seems to have gotten more difficult again...perhaps not up to original-level, but seems much harder than yesterday......getting waaaaaaaaaaaay more dark-levels, and more damned moles again. Inches away from uninstalling (for what will be the 4th time...in 2 weeks).
