It is not
I'd propose simply making them not work if the player is also holding down... and to have the same effect apply to standard ledge grabs as well.
What situations would you NOT want the climbing gloves? When making precise movements or simply traversing the level. Sticking to things can be annoying and kill you.
In what situations would you WANT the climbing gloves?
To scale certain walls. They're very useful for vertical traversal. But when you scale a wall, you consciously divert your attention to scaling the wall and cannot do anything else.
See what I mean? The climbing gloves are only useful when you make the conscious decision to scale a wall. Make us only stick to walls when holding up. When intentionally scaling a wall, it would still be easy, just hold up when you want to climb. Unintentional sticking would not happen anymore because nobody holds up when they are traversing the level.
Idea inspired by 20XX, a roguelike Megaman X game. There are climbing gloves in that game. If you are unfamiliar with Megaman X titles, the player can slide down walls. Collecting climbing gloves transformed the slide into a stick, which was annoying. The devs remedied this by making you only stick when holding up.
When you want to stick to a wall for certain situations, you can still do so, unaffectedly. While the rest of the game can continue on as normal.
Then that would make it so you couldnt look down, which would suck
Honestly, i would recommend just using them. After you get used to them you wont really notice it.
It isnt possible to edit how climbing gloves work, which is the entire topic of this coversation
