Never played Spelunky, should i buy this one or the first?

Spelunky 2 is more like a vastly improved version of Spelunky 1 (with lots of differences of course). As both have a similar price, get Spelunky 2.
But expect an extremely hard game. If you think it might be too hard, get Spelunky 1 first, which is somewhat easier.

HD (the remake on steam of the original gamemaker game) is a lot easier than this one. Both have their own strengths, but you'll probably have a harder time getting into this one if you weren't already a fan of the "series".

I have no idea why no one has commented this, but if you don't want to spend money and still want the spelunky expierience, play spelunky classic for free on Mossmouth's website. It is the first (often forgotten) entry of the Spelunky Trilogy, and is one of the most charming games I have ever played. Plus it's free, so no commitment if you aren't into what Spelunky has to offer! I honestly don't understand why it is so slept on, and for someone who is new to what Spelunky is all about, Spelunky classic is a great first contact.

To sum everyone's answer up: Get Spelunky 2 for a ton more content than Spelunky 1, but a much harder experience. Get Spelunky 1 if you want a simpler, easier, and a more classic experience. Finally, get Spelunky Classic if you're looking for a simplified version of Spelunky 1. I personally didn't enjoy Classic as much as Spelunky 1, but it is a good go to if you want to get into Spelunky.

more content doesnt mean better, spelunky 2 adds questionable things like moles that everyone hates etc
