How do sleeping hired hands work?
I'm trying to unlock the last shortcut, and I need to get a hired hand to the end of 4-4 to do that. The problem is that hired hands love to suicide. I read about putting them to sleep, but sometimes I'll put them to sleep and then either see them running up to me later on in the level or they just don't show up at the end, presumably because they died trying to get to me. What are the rules for them staying asleep? Does it last a set time or do they wake up based on some trigger?

To put them to sleep you have to carry them, crouch, drop.

This has to be done in a safe space so that they don't detect an enemy and activate.

If possible drop them in 3 tile deep cave so that they can't get out.

That's it. It will likely require multiple attempts.

I find that after I drop them, I crouch too (acting like you are asleep(?)), and they sleep 100% of the time within about 5 seconds. Now if a bomb goes off, or I get hurt further away, they often wake and rush to me. In other words, make them sleep then run to the end.

They wake up after a period of time as well

I could see that. It works like a charm for me - but I don't hang around the level long. I did notice them waking up, regardless of whether it was from explosions, me getting hurt, or just too much time.

So they wake up from bombs exploding, me taking damage, enemies getting too close to them and time?

here's a much easier way, break the coffin in abzu after killing kingu, it was tina for me and when i exited the level the tunnel lady asked for help, so i gave her to her. Even if you have tina unlocked that coffin should have a hired hand

You could also try to beat the giant fish in the Tide Pool 4-2. It drops a hired hand when you kill it.

There's a hidden stat regarding with hired hand called "trust"

The more levels you clear with a hired hand, the more trust you earn up to 3 points of trust (1 trust each level)

The more trust you have, the longer you can hold the hired hand and the longer it sleeps. at trust level 3, you can hold them and putting them to sleep for a whole 2 minutes.

This should make it easier, + good knowledge if you need a hired hand at trust lv.3 if you want to get a plasma canon to the city of gold more safely when going solo.
