The best Dpad and overall ergonomics I've come across and it reads as Xbox360 controller on PC, so just plug and play, no hassle with any games so far. Not sure how the Dpad compares to the controllers you mentioned as I last played Sega as a kid, but the Sega saturn and Neo geo Dpads remind me of X360 Dpad, which personally I'm not a fan of (round Dpad), although the odds are they work better than the X360. I noticed that in Spelunky, it was easy to accidentally have the Dpad slightly tilted to the right or left when trying to look down and you don't really want any accidental moves in this game :)
I used to use X360 controller exclusively on PC. Then I discovered Spelunky where precision really matters and I also had to hold down the R2 99% of the time. And since the ergonomics weren't really there, I noticed my finger started to get fatigue. I tried the SN30 Pro+ I had bought as one of the controllers for Nintendo Switch and the difference was like night and day.
Even though I swore in the name of X360 controllers before this one, I'm never going back. No pun intended :D
P.S. Wow the price of that Razer controller, 150€ is a lot for a bad Dpad and a few leds :D
P.P.S. Playstation controllers might be worth taking a look at too. As far as I know, their Dpads are good too.
TL;DR - Check out 8Bitdo SN30 Pro+
it works well but no analog triggers, not like a game like spelunky needs them
Do you use x360ce? I've been trying to get it to work with my old-ass Logitech Dual Action controller, but Spelunky 2 refuses to recognize it as input.
The PS4 controller is good for the most part, but micro USB sucks ass and the design of the controller is pants on head dumb and actually makes the controller lean on the USB connector when you sit it down on a flat surface, so the cables wear out quickly. The PS5 controller is *very expensive* but they fixed the stupid placement of the USB connector *and* upgraded to USB C, so the fact that I'll save about 30 dollars a year on replacement USB cables makes it worth the extra 20-40 dollars.
Solved it!
Now Spelunky 2 recognizes my 2004 controller as a modern XBOX controller. It works!
Top notch D-pad, perfect button layout, and very ergonomic.
