Is there a way to unlock this shortcut to practice the level?

Unlock the Water China shortcut (don't recall what the stage name is), then spend your initial four bombs to blow away the ground. Then either expend a rope or jump down and lose one HP and you can go to the Temple, though without any bombs.

Imho this is case of bad game design and egypt area should be available immediately without pointless repetition.

you can climb down without ropes or hp loss if you bomb down above pillar and then ledgegrab drop

If losing 4 bombs to go to Temple is intentional, that's one thing but I'd much rather not have to spend time bombing it myself. Just take my bombs and send me to temple, y'know?

The fact that Olmec is still there is very interesting. Doesn't that mean you can reach Abzu from the shortcut though?

You would still need the Udjat from the Dwelling.

The Olmec strategy also lets you practice fighting it. I got my first win on it after starting from the shortcut.

Sure, going in with nothing but four ropes and bombs made it harder than if I was properly equipped, but on the other hand I got to try it as much as I liked.

Not necessary. I've reached it from the 1-4 shortcut.

I guess, did you just bomb to Vlad's then?

You don't need the Crown to reach Abzu, just the Ankh. I rushed through Volcana (without grabbing the Crown) to practice the quick way of getting the Ankh (in Olmec's Lair, use your four bombs to cut out parts of the wall to the right so that Olmec can climb it. If you do it in a very specific way, you'll be able to enter the exit hole for the back layer and grab the ankh from there.).

I've seen that strat done with the mattock. And yeah, it's true you can skip many of the items and still reach Abzu, but the intended path starts with the Udjat.
