Can you unlock characters on co-op?

From what I recall, you couldn't unlock new characters while playing on co-op. Is it the same here?

You can unlock characters in co-op this time around. At least in local co-op.

Even in online multipalyer? I didn't find any new character when playing as online co-op with my friends these days.

I got most the skins on co-op with one person dead, don't know what you talking about.
