You can get prepared for them after the guest house though: if you are about to pick up an obviously important item, you can expect something to come after you. This is even more telegraphed by the old house segment where you must traverse in the dark to get one of the main McGuffins; you can bet that monsters will jump on you after picking it up and starting your way back.
Although at this point it would be easier if you watched a let's play up until the first shadow puzzle and determine it for yourself. Takes around an hour at most.
Jack crushing trough wall is optional and its very efective for first time
Margarite boss fight is homage to evil dead 2

Mia's first attack? Marguerite on the staircase? Jack when taking the final Dog Head?
This game is pretty damn scary if you ask me. The guest house was probably the worst for me, along with the ship.
I have BEATEN this game. It is definitely scary, but jumpscares have to be “HI IM HERE NOW AND IN YOUR FACE” in order to even make me jump. It’s super gorey if anything.
I can think of two occasions in the game that clarify as what you would call a jump scare. I like jump scares if they're done well. But horror comes in many forms. It doesn't always have to be a jump scare. Tension, dread, claustrophobia, these are all awesome forms of horror. I'd say this game nails it's atmosphere really well.
But I won't deny that the last third of the game definitely loses some of it's momentum. The ship scared me senseless though, I was jumping at every sound.
