Stuttering/lag issues
Hi. I have looked up and tried suggestions for improving stuttering but they just make the game worse. I started the game on ultra and it ran smoothly and with not a single lag spike or noticeable frame rate stutter. After the dinner scene near the start of the game, I have randomly been getting terrible lag spikes that will last sometimes for 15 seconds or so. I turned down some settings and it runs the exact same so I reverted the settings. I want to get into this game, but it just isn't possible when stuff like this happens. I know the game just launched two days ago, so I can't force myself to be too upset. I'm wondering, what has worked for others with this problem? Is there a patch I can download yet or do I have to just wait until capcom releases a patch?

Hey man, from what I've learned, the most likely issue is texture quality. Textures set to Very High require a huge amount of vram, to the extent that even those with gtx980s can have stuttering. The fix is simply to set textures to medium and everything else maxed out.

Granted, I have no idea what kind of rig you have, but if it's a bit on the weak side like mine you can also set shadows to medium, disable ambient occlusion and reflections, and worst case scenario enable interlacing (though that diminishes image quality in exchange for a large boost in performance.)

Also, here is a fantastic RE7 PC settings guide, it should really be stickied on this forum because it's absolutely superb. http://www.game-debate.com/news/21989/resident-evil-7-pc-performance-breakdown-and-most-important-graphics-options

Also, disable shadow cache. Almost forgot that one - enabling it eats more vram in exchange for higher framerates, but if you don't have enough vram it only increases render time.

Thank you for your reply and suggestions. I have changed the texture settings down to medium. I thought it would bum me out seeing as how well the demo and first part of the game ran on ultra but on medium the graphics don't seem too different so far, though the frame rate definitely has upped.
Thanks again!

I have a GTX 970 and am still getting stuttering here and there with Shadow Cache Off and textures on High. Something told me I should've got it for Xbox One or PS4 because I don't have the budget for a new graphics card.

med vs very high textures look the same, it only affect pop ins which are not even noticable. consoles textures are set to medium anyway

top is medium, bottom is very high

I think I fixed it by setting the refresh rate to 60 Hz. I have a 144Hz monitor but I guess the 970 isn't strong enough for that.
im not having issues

but granted that you go and post and yet have nothing for us to work on
show specs please

also is your drivers up to date?

I have the problem fixed for the most part now, but I'm on 8GB of ram, AMD FX8350 and msi r9 280x and drivers are up to date

Texture Quality on Medium, Shadow Cache = Off, Shadow Quality = High, Anti-Aliasing = FXAA, everything else maxed out or ON, running on the latest Nvidia drivers.

That fixed it for me. I was not too keen in lowering the Texture Quality to medium but looking at it, I don't really see a drop in visual fidelity.

GTX 970 user here. Apparently the game is VRAM heavy.

I have the same problem but only if there is another character on the screen. I can run around fine no issues at a solid fps but as soon as Jack shows up it is unplayable.

I have a 970, 4790k, and 16g ram.

I will try dropping textures, I just can't figure out why that would only matter when another player is on the screen. I have the drivers released for the game. Even the scene where the old lady is just sitting in the chair dropped my framerates.

To the above replies, the reason you're having issues despite having strong graphics cards (like the GTX970) is actually because of how Capcom coded the textures (at least from my theory.) Considering that the base version was made for 1080p/60fps on consoles, the base textures are actually set to medium. This means that "high" textures are actually simply upscaled versions of the medium ones, and thus this upscaling process eats a huge amoutn of vram. This is especially difficult for a 970 due to it's last .5gb being quite slow.

TL;DR - Use medium textures, and don't worry about any loss in quality, it appears to be essentially the same.

Hey folks
I too have been having similar lag issues and atleast in my case I accidentally found what was the issue that was causing my game to lag.

Bizarrely it was my Xbox controller plugged into the PC. I noticed while in the middle of a lagfest session on Resi, it didn't lag when I used my mouse for movement and when I picked up the controller the lag continued.

I simply unplugged the controller out and back in again and hey presto! The lag was gone.

Maybe not a fix for all of you but, hopefully it helps some of you.

I had a weird lag, initially thought it was the CPU, but turns out you were right. Changed usb ports and the lag is gone. Cheers!
Setting texture quality to medium fixed my game big time. Thank you guys. i5 4670k, gtx960,8 gb ram, win10
