How to play with controller correctly?
I have seen some old threads about this but have not found a solution. For both xbox one wired and a steam controller my B button acts as select, my X buttom acts as Escape, I have to use my triggers to turn, etc. It is so messy and impossible to play! How are people able to get controller imput to work correctly!!!??? I just did a fresh reinstall and deleted the .ini file and nothing changes. Please help me.

I have a XBox 360 wired controller, and I've had no problems.

What? There is no way you are using official gamepads and no third party software.

If all you do is plug in an xbox controller, there should be no issues.

You must have some gamepad emulation software running or something like that.

Do other games run fine with oyur controller?

All other games work just fine and I have never downloaded any imput modification software. I mainly do keyboard and mouse. However, when I use my steamlink, I use a steam or xbone one OFFICIAL controller. It is then that I noticed that THIS GAME IN SPECIFIC is the only one to be having this issue. I know I am not the only one with this problem. I even tried running the .exe as an admin and that didn't help.

I've had my XBox One controller for a year now. Never had such problems with any games, including RE7. All I did was plug it in, let it install its own drivers (this should happen automatically) and it was set. What you're mentioning usually happens when the controller you're using is NOT official. I know because I had many cheap controllers before I decided to upgrade to an XBox One controller (the others used to last for a few months even when I was careful). While they would work just fine in some games, others would have all the controls mixed up.

Either make sure your controllers are REALLY official or check for their drivers. Try uninstalling and installing them again.

And for the record, no one will ♥♥♥♥ on you for having unofficial controllers. Lots of people use ones that aren't manufactured by Microsoft (XInput) or Sony (DualShocker) for a number of reasons. Logitech, for example, seems to be a popular choice among Americans.

Oh, alright. So yeah, must be the drivers. idk how common this is, but the drivers of one could be interferring with the other.

Just tried that... still not working right... Still have messed up controls. It pauses with a Right Thumbstick press, blocks with the left bumper, opens the map with the left thumbstick click... Ugh, I have it set to default controls for both the controller and the game too

Man I'm so glad someone else is having this problem! I can concur I'm running into the exact same issue with my xbox one controller as well (B button is select, X is back, etc.). What's really weird is I'm halfway through the game where my controller was working just fine, and the other day when I booted it up to play, it all of sudden had all my controls jumbled. I have validated the controls all work perfectly in other steam games, it is literally only in RE7 where I'm seeing all the controls screwed up.

I noticed also that when I go to check key bindings/controller setup in-game, it only displays keyboard buttons to bind to different actions, it doesn't display controller bindings anywhere. Not sure if that's normal or not, but it's as if I can't change controller bindings at all, like it's not getting detected, when in reality it DOES detect controller buttons that I press, just with completely incoherent mappings like what OP described.

Since Steam now supports other controllers apart from theirs, it might help to go big picture and have a look at and fiddle with the controller settings. I have a wired 360 contoller and it runs in XInput mode no problem.

The main draw for the Steam Controller is the freedom to map controls. Why don't you try remapping the button(s) you're having problems with? It's quite fun to find the control scheme that works for you.

Its understandable to do that.. but when I cant even get the trackpad to configure for me to look around its just plain impossible for me. For some reason I have to use the Triggers to ruen left and right in game
