The Fan Made Pre-Alpha Was Better.
My opinion
  • Spamming left and right mouse key and shift to dodge seems to be a bit too linear for me. (See bottom of this post)
  • Have the Green Exploding Grimms (for lack of terminology) reduce health to half, not insta-kill.
  • Implement a scoreboard with the ability to view user profiles.
I already made friends who are fans of RWBY, but had to bid farewell as it would take too long to find them through steam.
  • Make it an option to be able to change characters at any time after a respawn or a checkpoint. Similar to how there are cooldown times to upgrade levels, 4 Ruby's on a team was quite weird.
  • Character models seem shrunken down.
At least make them seem signficantly larger than a pebble.
  • Audio Clipping.
When there seems to be loud sound effects, there's a lot of clipping that leads to distortion. I switched to different headphones and lowering volumes, but this seems to be a game issue.
  • I'm sure game optimization would come later.
I'm running this with 32gb of ram, AMD FX9590 and GTX 780TI SLI. So the drops to 20-30fps is a bit of an eyesore.

Why wasn't there more aspects taken from the Pre-Alpha?

I'd have to say the fan game was better. In the fan game, Ruby would hold her fighting stance after completing a combo, the only way to get out of this was to fire her Crescent Rose to recoil back in the air, or whirlwind her way out. In which there's an option to continue with 4 more air combos and finish off with a special move. In the fan made game, combos could be invented, they weren't listed in a game manual but it was neat to float in the air with a 9 hit combo.

Sure there's the cool factor of destroying 20+ Grimms, but they don't feel significant enough to matter and this game becomes a simple hack and slash.

I'm sure it will improve after all the guy who made the fan game was hired by Rooster Teeth when they adopted the game.

Unfortunately I feel Rooster Teeth actually took some steps back in regards to the combat system. Sure there's a steeper learning curve in the Fan-Made but after I spent about 1-3 hours fighting, fighting a mere 5-8 Grimms is much more satisfying than swiping 10-20 at a time. That includes the fact the pre-alpha includes enemy lock that everyone is complaining about, where it's removed in the pre-release.

Our tastes may differ, you can download the Pre-Alpha at http://nicoblog.org/pc-games/rwby-grim-eclipse-usa/
