Mods and XP - A Community Vote
Note: Changes according to the poll result is now applied.
(You can still vote to turn it around)

Introduction
Enabling some mods prevents the player from progressing in XP, masteries and rank (currently). Only gameplay changing mods disable XP (so texture packs are fine, of course). Once disabled the player get to advance once again. This is a vote to see if the community would like a change to the rules. So I have decided to set up this poll thread to see what everyone wants.
Please read the post before going straight to the comment section.

Ever since you got to keep your XP and progression when the game ended (when this game stopped being moba-like), mods has prevented progression because mod users should not get an advantage over normal players.
Please note that you cannot use mods in public games, they do not affect normal players that way.

You can find the mods in the RWBY:GE Modding Sub Forum to the left

Before You Vote
All mods will still disable the achievements.
Currently: Only mods that affect gameplay in any way disables progression.
Such as the Survival mode, a game mode with infinite waves of grimm, each wave is increasingly difficult.
Mods such as texture packs and keybinding do not disable progression.

Mods that are clearly cheating will still disable progression.
with that I mean mods such as: 'god mode', Spawn Grimm at Will, no AI, more skill points, or changed Grimm stats.
those mods will still disable progression regardless of the outcome of the vote.

Votes
(Number of votes for each entry is updated every 24h)
  • A. Mods should allow progression of XP, Masteries and Rank.
A reason/opinion: They do not help you. You still have to kill all the grimm yourself. They only change the way we play the game.
    Votes: 36
  • B. Mods should not allow progression of XP, Masteries and Rank.
A reason/opinion: Mods are not part of the native game. Only in native game you may get xp.
    Votes: 12
  • C. Mods should allow 1/2 progression of XP, Masteries and Rank.
Only progresses half as fast. ie. you only get half the xp.
A reason/opinion: They do help you a little. You still have to kill all the grimm yourself. They change the way we play the game. That little advantage can be countered by slowing down progression.
    Votes: 5
  • D. Mods should allow 1/4 progression of XP, Masteries and Rank.
Only progresses quarter(0.25) as fast. ie. you only get quarter of the xp.
A reason/opinion: They do help you a little. You still have to kill all the grimm yourself. They change the way we play the game. That little advantage can be countered by slowing down progression.
    Votes: 5
You may compile your own vote with your own specifications, for example:
"I'm for progression for game modes but not for 'grimm spawn difficulty multiplier'."

The game is not protected by vac.
Futher you will under no circumstances be banned for using mods. The mods do not allow you to cheat in any way. Also the mods is a-okayed by the devs:

Simply put, no need to worry about anything dude. Just enjoy mods as you like.

im just worried because some files can get you vac banned so i wanted to make sure as a tf2 player that that wouldn't happen because i've heard some stories of it happening and interfereing with other games
Jeff Kaplan (for Overwatch) was asked about using mods for other games and worried that OW may detect them and ban. Jeff basically said banning for cheating/modding only happens if you are cheating/modding on that particular game.

Basically a game's anti-cheat detection should only be checking that game you're playing. Not every other game you have installed.

I vote for B.
They do it this way in other games so I don't see why not do it the same. Besides, modding can help you cheese your way through levelling up (more than you already can now) and if someone is willing to grind their way up the ranks and you used a mod to do it in a fraction of the time, it just feels skummy and borderline cheating. Some would call it cheating, so...

If it was 1/4 progression (D) then it would not go faster while still making some progress (i believe).

Or just go by principle as other games and just not allow it at all anyway.

Other than that, only A and B make sense. you either fully allow it, or fully disallow it, a middleground would most likely just hurt everyone.

Edit:
What I mean is, choosing half-way will most likely upset both modders (who won't be getting full XP, which feels worse than not getting any at all) and purists alike (who will be mad because modders are getting xp)

So I'd rather we just pick a side and stick to it.
I agree with Changeling about picking one or the other . As a modder though, so I think A is fair to people who pop in and out of the game testing things. Only god mode or game breakers should disable xp.

Considering the mods seem to be nothing but alternate models/skins and a couple new maps? Why should that prevent game progressions? Vote A.

Even if there were mods to make the game easier, does it matter? It only takes like 2-3 hours to get to max level with a character.

No, no. Please read the "Before you vote" in the post.

This vote is for mods like the 'game modes mods' such as the Survival mode and the new Missions added, ... etc

And yeah I believe you can level to 10 under an hour by just playing on eclipse difficulty.

First, sorry for the long post. TL;DR at end.

In all honesty, I vote A. Truth be told, having all skills doesn't make it that much easier; at least when playing solo. You're still required to survive and kill the Grimm at the end of the day, so that's ultimately what matters most, I feel.

Horde mode solo is extremely hard with 70% of the skills on normal difficulty, (or I just suck; whichever).

I'd like to play survival mode but unless I get xp and progression I don't feel like it's worth it. And especially since you still get xp and skills progression in horde mode.

I mean, aside from it being infinite with tweaked waves survival mode is pretty much horde mode sans turrets and control centers. (I'm aware survival mode came first).

In all honesty, if you like a certain character, you're probably going to use them all the time anyway, so you'll probably have most if not all of their skills unlocked (read: not active) eventually, or want to.

Should you really be punished for wanting to use them to their fullest potential? Or for just goofing around offline?

Maybe have it so it allows xp and progression as long as you're offline or playing solo? I don't know. Just a thought.

Another note, currently any level beyond 10 is pretty useless because you stop earning skill points after level 10.

I understand if this was for balancing, but it sorta defeats the purpose of having extra levels.

Personally I'd like to see skill points after level 10. But again that's just my opinion.

As to how you could do it, maybe give one point every 2 levels until you hit the max you would need for all skills active? That way it's still sorta balanced and continues to encourage playing. Or go with one point per level like in vanilla? Dunno.

As to mods like the spawn grimm multiplier and the spawn grimm on key press mod, I feel like those are safe for xp and progression as well. I mean, isn't making the game harder punishment enough?

I'd like to note that I only play solo and offline. That being said, I do feel like god mode and play as Grimm and other obviously cheaty mods like that should disable xp and progression.

Anyway these are my thoughts.

TL;DR

I vote A because reasons.

Edit 1: added more information to flesh out thoughts.

Edit 2: formatting cleanup.
