The BCU should recharge automatically to 500 energy 100 mass, yes solar panels give out little power but that is why you get a couple of them (like 20+ haha). I personally do 3 solar panels to 1 wind turbine, it does take a lot to start getting there, but sometimes you get lucky with the loot inside the hunter bases and get a panel or turbine there. However you need to add turbines for the fall/autumn and winter days, solar does very little then.
In my opinion you should add the hunters in, but keep them at no attack and no revenge mode. Their bases are great for items, after you setup potato farms for the alcohol and molotovs.
I struggled with clam pearls a lot, but i dedicate a season to getting those with diving gear now and it works well for me.
Also during winter i turn off extractors to save up energy if i need extra.
It is grind-y but manageable, just needs time. I don't hunt small and mid size animals (bunny chicken wolves bears) with weapons, they are just for hunter raids, defense, or when i go out to look for the plane crash or rogue hunters.
Basic bow with basic arrows is what you should use on small game, wolves and bears. I do hunt cougars and moose with shotgun after tagging them with an arrow.
I don't like cave exploring as im far away from entrances with base (would love to see a boat or some transport on water) but i do go at least once in spring, summer or fall. Winter i don't want to risk breaking my axe and pickaxe in cave then i can't break ice to surface. Happened once and almost died, just got lucky that i could craft underwater, heh.
