''Fighting without fighting'' idea makes full stamina bar the best ''weapon'' :)
the request is a "loaded" question. It all depends on what you are wanting to accomplish and also you have to take into account how much damage each weapon does. Personally I use the 44 pistol. With one (and only 1) upgrade it does the job on everything. biggest problem is getting ammo for it.
Thought the original pistol was useless?
the 9MM is useless however untill you get enough parts to make the 44 you are stuck. takes 5 shots to kill a wolf and 9-12 to take down a bear. best thing you can do with the 9MM to survive is make a ramp and use that for safety
Foe me, so far, the single barrel shotgun. The DB was pretty worthless until I upgraded power and reload speed one time, now it's my no.2 go to. I' excited about crafting the lever action rifle because I have a tons of the incendiary ammo laying around from plane crashes for it. I also want to get the recurve bow so bad, but I just don't have enough gun parts for either, yet. The red pistol even upgraded one time upgraded is nearly worthless, I almost never use it, too many shots to kill even a wolf and can't shoot a rabbit or chicken with it. One shot with the once upgraded DB and the blue slugs will kill a wolf. I almost always just skirt wolves now, not worth the ammo for what you get, rather shoot a bear or cougar, or even a deer, and especially a moose. I never even shoot those pigs, ever, they won't hurt you and one chunk of meat is not worth the ammo. Might as well make them a farm animal so you can fatten em up.

My reasoning is: You are going to be getting free ammo of every type anyway. So have something that can use each type and when you get low on one ammo type, switch to something else.
That being said, the Pump Shotgun is great for one shotting wolves and finishing bigger animals that you wear down with arrows. The Recurve can have it's damage upgraded and will use relatively cheap arrows. I keep my Rifle ready to fight hunters. And when I get to where I can afford it, I use the Lever-action with incendiary rounds at plane crashes and in caves.
