is there a better way of playing other than multiplayer

my son and i love playing Subsistence and have a single game each and a multiplayer, which i setup, but we were wondering is there a better way, because he can't get in and play unless i am already on, if i leave the multi he gets kick off, and we were kind of hoping he could live on one side of the map and me on the other and do our thing with our on own BCU's generating power, but meet up to do cave dives or shoot some baddies together, do we have to go to a server for that kind of a deal, or is that scenario impossible, no matter what? thanks for any help

Hi, mp in subistence is basicaly co op and as you say your son gets kicked off if you close your game. You could just leave your PC on SS ingame,
There is an alternative rent a dedicated server you'd install it to your PC it runs 24 hours .

Which one of you plays more? If your son plays more then just create another co-op game with him hosting.

I wish CG would do what Empyrion does for MP where the host creates a server instance as well as a client. You can log out of the client with the server still running on your PC and others can still play.

I also play with family that are remote and I often don't want to play when they do. If I stay on I eventually die from lack of food and water. I've had to resort to using WeMod and setting myself to be effectively in god mode. However it also affects other players. Not a good option IMO.

i play more i am retired and he still has to work for a living, funny thing is i don't feel one bit guilty haha

we recently started a 7 days to die and the same thing Zuleica i stayed on until horde night and he was about 2 or 3 days off

Ii don't feel one bit guilty haha' You shouldn't I'm sure you earned it. I'd do it to if I just had about a million more in my bank account, but as is, I got a few more years of stress to deal with, so if my clients don't kill me first, one day I'll be free at last too!

One idea is that you and your son could play together or separately on one of the official MP servers.
