Are the mining drills worth it?
I keep running out of ore, so wondering if the mining drill is worth the cost?

I know it seems like I ask many question. Sure, I could look it up. But one reason I do it is I want to keep the forum discussions active. It would be nice to see more players. I want to see the updates keep coming, there are still a lot of things that would be nice to see added to the game.

They always were for me. I mean, once you have power to run them while you are away it`s a win win. Even while you have to mizer and use generators to run it/them while at base. I se 4, all for what I neede d most, then as I was catching up I changed one to next needed, and so forth til I was having everything.

My power is limited. I have one solar panel and one wind turbine, neither upgraded. I have a gen full of biofuel though. The ore shortage is killing.

For me, the answer is simple. If you are playing on a dedicated server, then yes its very very very much worth the cost. My drill runs around the clock. I wake up in the morning harvest the 100- 120 ore of my choosing, then go to work. Come home another 100-120 ore. Keep in mind I had to get my power to the point that you can run it 24/7, but yes worth it. Now for single player, man thats a tough one. Your game stops, so you must be logged in for it to be working. Yes I believe it's still worth it, but maybe not as quickly in the build chain as on a online server. I can think of several things I would put before it.

Mining drills are definately worth it for me.
They are your source for bottled water to make berry juice, copper drill iron ore drill zinc drill and potasium.
But like all things in this game step by step and gradually increase add build upgrade.
Balance the solar panel and wind turbines amount to what power you need.
I have 10 that are always on.
Well they are on and when I log into my co op Everyday.
Upgrade them to drill faster and use less power.

Thanks. I'm going to go ahead and build my first one.

I don't think that thing will be running while I'm out and about. It knocked my power out and I had to turn the gen back on. I't still drilling so I have to stick around and watch it for a while. I'm worried that even with the gen running, it will knock off my power and cause all of my meat to spoil, we'll see...

OK, that's odd. Now with it on, I'm still gaining power. My turbine is turning because it's storming, but the gen is not on. I have to stick around here a couple days to get used to this thing...

I wish we could have a gen that would automatically kick on if the power gets too low.

i just recently started up a new game, i've already got 4 drills and 2 dual laser refineries.

it's still not enough.

build way more solar and drills... you can turn them on and off whenever you want.

I am based under Ore Rock so ore is very plentiful, but it's a distance from any water. So I use three mining drills for water. I average over 20 bottles per day. I found water bottles to be far superior to canteens so I don't use canteens at all.

Nice. Right now, I just want ore, iron and copper from mine. I step out the back door and fill canteens to water my plants and then put some of them on the stove.

In your specific case I would say the mining drill is not worth it. You'd be better off using the power you generate for a fridge or just to build up stored power for additional crafting. Wait until you have enough generation to run a fridge, enough over production to store a lot, then think about a mining drill.

An upgraded mining drill produces about 1 bottled water every 10 minutes. That would come to 3 a day from each drill, making a total of 9. How do you get 20?

Everytime I check my drills I average about seven in each. I usually only play about an hour a day real time so I might be off a bit..
