They can be everywhere you look.
Years ago when i first started playing the dev said they would be replaced soon
as they were a temp solution.. That was over 3 years ago.
I find if I run through and area and find little/nothing if I loop back and run through the area again a little while later it has a more normal number of crates. My suspicion is that the crates do not appear until you are near and running is faster than the appearing. Hence I loot in big circles retracing my steps.
That's the thing about RNG, it is different for everyone.
I think the more you are able to craft, mine and raise animals at home, the less hand outs the game gives you in the wild.
What do you mean coincidence? I've started more than half a dozen games and have noticed what I said in all of those playthroughs. I suggest you try the experiment I described. And in case it's not clear, I'm not saying this is some kind of glitch but that it is purposeful design by CG.
According to your hypothesis, at best, how many crates should we be able to find within an hour in a late game playthrough?
I don't know, I never tried to do a count. You wouldn't need to do a count to try out what I suggested, although you could if you wanted.
I'll do a structured test sometime and show the results here.
