I went across to where lithium and obsidian is supposed to be found in and around the new area but didn't find any. I guess the best bets are either to build another base in that area or wait for a lockbox or plane to drop some.

Obsidian by the tall falls is up above. look at the rocks on the stream and also the 3 big rocks over by the fence line. I ocassionally get a piece right at the top of the falls. The best place for Obsidian is right by the happy tree over in the "high" area.
Lithium is also right by that obsidian area, The high round hill with the happy tree seems to have a decent amount.

by new area are you referring to the tall falls in the SW area. If so, you will get obsidian above the falls. you should find about 3 pieces if you check the area out closely. Be aware that there is a cougar up there along with the wolves and bears. Use the map to see where the area is,.

Found all three in various designated areas. They appear a nodes, just like iron, copper, etc. Search an area, pick up all nodes of any type, return to the area the next day and you should find the new ores. All ore spawns are place holders. so loot to prompt new spawns.

Found in new area at the river formed from water fall on a large boulder. Cougar area.
Hard to share with you as we dont have GPS keep exploring and you will come across these. Remember where.

I also found one nearby the East Lake just west on the large rocks.

If you've been there for the first time, it's most likely that. The game has problem dropping loot in an area where you've never been before. Ii had the same issue when I went to look for obsidian. Couldn't find any the first time I went. After that, it slowly went up. Lithium is a bit more tricky, because it's rare. My experience is that you might find several ores one days and then it's one or two ores the next few days.

The 'new area' is what CG opened up before the last update, I don't know what it's called but has just 1 waterfall within it.

The area on the west above the waterfall is Skyscape Plateau. Very good for obsidian, but if you don't want cougars involved, there is an area east of there, where another stream goes down from the mountain into a pond (no big waterfall, just a couple of small ones). The chances there are not as high, but if you hit the area frequently, it's bound to have some without cougars. There is a bear around, but he's usually easy to dodge.

Spent 2 game days looking in the places without finding any of them. When you say the 2 rocks at top of waterfall which waterfall are you talking about?

Just look at the outlines on the map. Almost any rock formation that is within that area has those elements spawning with the listed probabilities.
