there's a few ways to use planters, you can either babysit them with water and fertilizer for fast growth... or you can just let them go and they will grow slowly.
starting out i would just make 2 or 3 planters and get them going asap.
the sooner you start producing your own veggies the better.
eventually you'll be strong enough to take down hunter bases... and when you do you'll be able to steal their ashes... which can be used for the planters.
once you're established you can start adding more and more to your base... more power generation, more planters, more drills and refineries...
but it all starts with the firsts.
This might help:
Subsistence Game Guide - One must balance the need for power

asking how much of each is "needed" is like asking "how much does a red car cost"
depends on if you want a used ford fiesta or brand new tesla
I have 4 planters, all outside right now. If you have 4 all planted, the only way that I know to keep them fertilized is to have chickens and that tray installed. I guess you could use the ash from the one mineral, but you'd have to be mining all of the time or have more than one mining drill and those cost more power than one solar panel and a turbine can generate. I keep my generator running when I use just one of them and a fridge.
cheers
Chickens are great to create poop for fertilizer, although you have to keep them fed. Having 3 chickens to produce poop to fertilize plants, I would end up using the crops to have to feed the chickens, their poop would in turn only be used to fertilize their own food to keep them alive. I have 2 wood burners, wood is very easy to get and keeping them burning all the time creates a lot of ash to be used as fertilizer. If you end up going in caves, you can find phosphate which is a great fertilizer with a much better yield. Considering you find enough seeds to plant for all that fertilizer lol
you can get tons of woodash if you are killing the hunters at each base each day and stealing their ash.
the best thing to grow, IMO is tomatoes.
they are the best thing to feed chickens (they add water too), and they can be made into soup.
my fridge is nothing but steak and eggs and tomato soup (and rib and chicken dinners obviously)... i burn all my livers for mass.
i never raise rabbits, and i only harvest lev 10 chickens.
chickens require you to be chained to your base so they don't starve, so i like to have a bunch of coops, then spend two days catching chickens to fill them up...
this way i can make the most out of my chicken babysitting time. if you have to be there watching over them... might as well watch a bunch at once.
I found early on that running out of veggies is more of a concern than running out of protein. Shoot a chicken and rabbit a day and you're good on protein. But there are days there just seems to be blueberries everywhere and there are days there's no veggies in site. That's why I started building planters early on and filling them with tomato seeds.
Yeah, they grow reaaalllyyyy slow if you don't feed them.
I find it odd that they will grow even more slowly in winter, but they don't get killed by frost and snow.
indeed...
the higher the quality food you eat, the more stat boost you'll get.
low end would be cooked rabbit and chicken and small fish...
high end being the rib and while chicken dinners
a good middle ground is steak and eggs for protein, and tomato soup for veg.
if i'm almost completely zeroed out on protein and veg i'll eat a big dinner... if i's like a little more than halfway down i'll eat one each of steak and eggs and tomato soup.
do that as much as possible and before you know it you'll be all buffed out at at 125/125.
Note under your health stats is a red line once that reaches 100% level will go up 1.
Meals is the way to go.
Be it chicken stew from hand raised chickens fish pie roasts and veg liver and onions steak and eggs.
it takes a lot to get the stove and the cookware but it's very worth it.
chicken and rib dinners completely fill both of your stats and you need the stove to cook them.
focus on finding ore on rocks for a week and you'll have it.
you're starting to get to a point where it'll all start working for you... a little more solar, a few more things... you're getting closer to the point int he game where things start to speed up a little for you.
you should try to have at least one refinery and a drill if you don't already, both are very important.
2 drills and a dual laser refinery is a good goal to shoot for.
