Yep you can only get matches from crates.

i was hoping you could craft matches. Got one left...so I thought best thing to do was just keep my wood burner constantly going. Easiler to feed it fuel then to ignite it.

I do the same. It is fairily easy to keep the wood burner stoked if you check it every night. I have since stocked up on a few matches so if it ever does go out will be able to restart it.

I think another way to craft a fire is needed maybe like the old stiking rocks to get a spark or something, Ive died once from cold from no fire and still only have 3 matches found since :/

I've died three times now from hypothermia because I can't find matches. You get one match when you respawn. Once my one match went flying off into space. Another time I managed to get the fire lit but it went out before i could add fuel.
In my game all I seem to be getting in the crates are nails. electronics, and water. No matches!

I have found matches so far in the ammo crates. The blue camo ones. It seems that most loot has a chance of spawning in any crate though. Some loot has higher chances of spawning in certain crates. I have found scrap metal in ammo crates for example. I may have gotten matches form other crates and not noticed it though. Several times Ive discovered matches in my pack that I dont remember having seen when i opened crates. They are a very rare item though. Best option is just keep your fires fueled and burning. The resources needed to make a fire starter kit seem a bit high to me, compared to the tiny bit of time it takes to throw fuel in twice a day.

You can craft ignition sources now. Look in the same menu that the campfire is in.

Yea the fire starter kit wasn't in game when post was made, but sure glad they added it
