Animals dying in baited traps?
Firstly congrats Coldgames for an awesome game, for a single developer this is outstanding.

One issue, even in summer animals I trap are mostly found dead in the trap. The trap is checked at the end of the day/night and still has food in it. This is not realistic. Can a change be made please to reflect reality where perhaps 10% might die due to fright.

its the same as when you leave a live rabbit/chicken in your inventory for too long. they do eventually die, think of it as a spoil timer.

Yes, but in reality they should not have died, needs to be adjusted.

Subsistence has NEVER been based on realism .. ever. i wouldn't expect this to change, and if it does i don't see it happening any time soon, the next update is apparently adding dedicated servers so that will be the main focus for the following months of development.

Just like shooting animals in Subsistence, it's likely a random chance for a live animal in the traps. It won't get changed. You'll have to adjust.

Logically, an animal should live until there's food in the trap. However, imagine you've got twenty berries in it and still come late enough for the animal to chew through everything and still die. So you end up with a dead animal and zero bait. Some players wouldn't like it. A somewhat difficult choice from the developer standpoint, I reckon.

considering the low spoil times on berries, then on top of that the animal is consuming some of the berries so i'm not surprised they go so fast.

Traps are a mystery to me, even if I had an idea how long an animal would live after being trapped, there is no indication when an animal wanders into the trap and to keep checking the traps leaves little time for anything else. I agree that an animal should still be alive at least until the end of day.

I would check twice a day - check morning too - if the animal gets trapped right after you check it last night, it would be 24 hours before you check it again. I think animals in your inventory only last half a day or less. So try a 12 hour cycle of checking traps, then try 8 if not working.

I dont use traps - i just kill every small animal with the bow as im walking around looting crates.

Very well said. When traps were added, I built one each. After fiddling with them, I realized they are not worth the time and effort. It's easier just to fish or run and catch a chicken by hand when I need them. At least then, I am purposefully choosing to do those activities.

In short, the traps traped me more than they trapped the animals I wanted.

Traps are only useful in Hardcore where small game spooks from far away and is harder to hunt with the bow.

They die same as quickly as they do in your inventory and that is perfectly fine. If you want them alive just stick around and wait for the trap sound. I sometimes watch the animals from afar going slowly towards the trap and getting caught. It's very satisfying.

This. niemandel's tip helped ease my early hardcore run.
