I think the game is just fine.
What players want is things to be instants. I personally like the challenge that this game gives. Yes this game is a large learning curve, but once you get a handle on it. It gets real easy. Hunger is not a problem at all if you know how to handle it. Stamina works well if you walk and only use it to run. I have no problem with either and I have been under poison for so long, I would not know what to do it I was 100% in both (Health and Stamina) I decided to keep myself under poison for the challenge.
However, this game is so much easier if you do play co-op, which I am doing. The gathering is divided up between the 4 of us. I am the builder (when not hunting cougars) and I tend to the gardens and well we have a fully stock fridge with meats and meals and a crate full of other non pershable foods.
Crates full in a pattern once you learn it. Crates gathering becomes very easy and you start wishing more would drop.
The only thing I wish they had was a creative mode. So I could look at some building parts and see if they are worth building at the high cost of the mats.
Difficulty ? or boring mechanic which make player run from the game and give bad review ?
People run in circle, chopping wood forever, loot crate while they die from starvation, too me some life to make my first basement, that wasn't fun at all, lot of people would already giving up.
This is the first survival game with so much weird mechanic which don't work at all, and the first survival game that take so much time to do a shelter even an foundation.
This is all because of the loot crate, you need basic material from them, which are random, its not like you need some stone, you will gather some stone and its done, you will loot "lootbox" which maybe give you the proper material you need.
A friend of me tested the game, he asked for a refund 1 hours later, can't blame him, he is not the first i guess.
How many so-called survival games have you played?
You think this is hard. Try the The Long Dark. My guess you would not make in hour in game. This game does have a high learning curve and a really good challenge.
At first I was flustered with the game. I died so many times the first day. I almost rage quit. But once I learn the in's and out's and posted many questions. I finally figured it out.
Just because things does not come easy does not mean that the mechanic don't work. If it was to easy players would leave due to being bored and they would quit. (like many other so-called survival games). I have been playing for about a month and I still do not feel comfortable yet. I am always checking around me for that beloved bear or wolf that want to make me part of their meal plan.
Players gives bad reviews just because. This game is not for everyone just a few select good players. How to figure things out and adapt. Anyway if your this dislike the game and it mechanic this much. Quit playing, maybe after a few more updates it will be more to your liking. Then you can give it another try. Just saying.
From the sounds of it, you dislike the grind that comes with this game. To each their own. Fine I can see your point. But however, there are many players who does like it. To me the game is perfect. Once I got a handle on it. I am very much enjoying it. Yes I love the grind of having to get crates, to out smart whoever or whatever is watching it.
I have a lot hours in many different kinda of survival games, from The Long Dark to Rust.
I have had this game for little over a couple of month. I have about 300 hours in game. This is what I have been able to build during this time:

My fridge is full of food (stocking up for winter)
To me and my game play. This game is perfect for me, maybe not for you. For being an EA game, there are not the bugs that would expect to find. Anyway, just because you dislike the game and thinking that chasing crates around is dumb. There are plenty of games out there that might suit your game play better.
Please tell me more about that island because i for one think the game is fine the way it is. There is plenty of room for improvement and i'm sure the game will evolve organically albeit slow and steady but i'm perfectly fine playing the game the way it is right now. If you don't like it that's your problem. Nobody's forcing you to play it.
And this of course is just my opinion but “Grind” and “Hard” are to different game mechanics to me doing the same thing over and over like chopping trees or opening crates I don’t find hard just grindy where as fighting high level animals or hunters can be hard.
I’d agree a game needs a good balance of both but I just think CG could do better than opening rng loot bags as a key game mechanic.
So hopefully they are a placeholder.
If you cut out the core there's nothing left. And some people actually like that core and play the game for that core specifically..
I don't go on the NBA2K forums saying "love the game.. but omg enough with the basketball.. i want to do something more fun instead". If i did i would expect people to tell me to go play a different game too.
This right here. I love the grind, which is why I play this game. I love how hard it is and the challenge. This game doesn't give instant gratification, which is probably why many people don't like it. We're living in the age of an instant gratification generation, and this game simply doesn't cater to those folks, so I don't expect a big following. For me and those who like a challenge, we'll play this game forever.
