I think that the problem is not exactly the duration, Glow stick provides 0 visibility and we cannot see map during night, if you allow us to create somekind of torch using, sticks, rope and Oil or something with way more visibility this would solve a lot of issues, cause it becomes almost impossible to gather resources during night without a flash light and this forces a player to stay idle on base during night, losing valuable farming time and possibly face a base multiple kill, I got engaged by 2 parties of 2 during one night (A bear saved me from the second)
not sure if this helps or not but after playing constantly for a few months i can tell you how i deal with the current cycle and perhaps it helps.
each morning i'll eat and drink what i need to to max out, then essentially i just make the absolute most of my day.
i use a drop box near the door so after completing a lap of the lake i can drop everything below the top 2 rows quickly (food/meat needs to go in the fridge obviously) then head back out for the second half of the day.
once i've got that done i have time to do a task or two... chopping wood, pearl hunting, cougar killing, chicken hunting, off-base construction...
just before sunset i return to the drop box and pick everything up and sort out my days rewards.
nights are used for crafting (usually cordage and planks, sometimes bandages, etc... ), base repair, base construction, weapon, planter/animal watering/feeding, etc...
oh and cooking... one night cycle is just enough time to cook 5 or 6 steak + eggs/tomato soups, or 3 or 4 chicken/rib dinners. start it at sunset and keep an eye on things till sunrise so nothing rots.
it takes a bit to figure out what tasks you can be doing at night but once you figure out a routine you're good to go. there's probably a ton of stuff you do during the day that you could be doing at night... which gives you much more time during the day for looting.
honestly sometimes i don't have enough to do during the day so i'll do a second lap around the lake, things have usually re-spawned by then and worst case scenario i just swim back if it gets dark (no worry of predators or falling off a cliff).
