How Exactly Does Multiplayer Work?
Do you start a brand new co-op session and invite? Can you invite someone to your existing solo game that is saved?

Hi,

No solo save are not able to be used in co-op. You host or join some else’s co-op game and it is saved as a server.sav file.

Ok thanks very much. So if I were to host one it will show in the list for my buddy to join, and I could even start early and gather supplies and then later he joins?

Yes that is how it works but you many need to open a port in your router for your friend to see your game:

2. I DID PORT FORWARD BUT CAN’T HOST / CAN’T JOIN CO-OP?

This is a big one and will take a few sections to answer.

A. First things first you need to make sure you followed the PORT FORWARD guide correctly: http://steamcommunity.com/app/418030/discussions/0/♥♥♥♥861734121184986/

B. Ok if all of that is correct you have two options.

hey guys just download hamachi and use that. its free and easy to use. it creates a vpn for u that u and ur buddies can all link too.
1. host of game creates a new network on hamachi and all players connect to his network.
2. host game just like normal
3. all players joining use the person whos hosting the hamachi network's ipv4 to join the game (improtant: make sure u use the hosts ipv4 on hamachi, not his normal ipv4)

i use it all the time and works great on subsistence

Alright buckle up kiddos. To hell with port forwarding, i found an easy way to connect to at least one other player without headache or getting computer aids. Whoever has power over this thread drag this to the top.

1.) Install Team Viewer (ON BOTH MACHINES)
-Free software, from the company's website. It is used on an interprise scale, so if you go to the correct site you will not get viruses or bloatware.

2.) After downloading the installer, run it.
-Select advanced installation
-Select FOR PERSONAL USE
-Click ok
-Select TeamViewer && TeamViewer VPN
-Install

3.) Open TeamViewer.
-Select VPN
-Exchange codes and connect to eachother via VPN.
-A small box will apear with the IP addresses you will need

4.) Start game
-CO-OP
-Host (only one person does this)
-Set up game, Start game

5.) Connect
-From the blue box that has the TeamViewer VPN IP addresses, get the hosting machines VPN ip.
-Give host machine VPN IP to Other machine trying to join game
-At the bottom of the join screen in game there is a box that says direct connect. Put in host machine VPN IP and game password
-Click connect

6.) MAGIC

C. If you find that you can’t connect or host a game but you know it can be seen then this might be your issue:.

I believe the issue is caused by a particular character used in your MP profile name ("/"). I'm not currently correctly escaping the characters properly, leading to issues reading your MP profiles. I'll include a fix for the next update.

For now, naming the profile something else should solve the problem. Please let me know if you still experience issues.

Thanks for reporting this issue and sending your files, and sorry for the frustration.

Cheers ;)

Ok a few things to note here: 1. The issue is with the engine not the game as UNREAL 3 works on IPv4 not IPv6. 2. Make sure you password doesn’t contain any special characters as well. 3. The outside programs might have other issues depending on your system and you would need to contact them for answers.

Yes. He can join anytime after you make a coop game and use your stuff

True I forgot to add that. You might want to put a password on the hosted game so only your friend can join;-)

If you do need more help getting the port forward to work let me know. No guarantee but I will try to help ;-)

I see this is an old thread. Have things improved n this regard since 2018? Recently played Raft, coop, with Game started, search for co-op game, put in host Steam user name, and password (if used), connect, play, no hassle.

2022- is Subsistence more complicated than this today or just as easy as described above? Thanks!

That almost sounds like you are playing on a Steam server, I have not been playing for nearly a year but I believe it can still be done. This is what I found in my archives:

Playing with Steam friends:
1.) Players need to be Steam friends to see each others games in the new menu.
2.) Players also need to be on line in Steam (so not appearing offline).
3.) Hosts should use the same in-game host menu as before.
4.) Once launched, their friends should see them popup in the “Join/Friends” menu, and can join from there.
5.) Hosts, please ensure you set the required amount of open slots when launching the game.(10 max) !
6.) There’s also an issue where sometimes it will report that it failed to join, but then go in after anyway.
7.) The developer (CG) will be working to improve this and add better error messaging.

Personally I prefer Co Op as Critical described it.
