How to catch Chickens and Rabbits without killing them.
Dunno if this has been mentioned, I tried searching for it but didnt see anything.

If you 'Sprint and Bunnyhop' you can catch up to Chickens and Rabbits and capture them without killing or knocking them out. This way no ammo or arrows are wasted. You also capture the animal with half health.

you can sprint and catch chickens... but not rabbits... chickens will be at full health. You can use an arrow to capture them... sometimes it only knocks there health down to 5 instead of killing them, but you only have a few minutes to get them into animal housing before they die.

I've caught rabbits by the technique I mentioned. The rabbits are a bit trickier because they're faster(It seems) but it is possible to catch them without killing or knocking their health down. This allows you a longer time to hold the captured animal.

Sprint Bunny Hopping tricks the AI and allows you to catch chickens and rabbits without wasting arrows. try it, dont just Sprint, Bunnyhop as well.

You don't even need to 'bunnyhop' to catch chickens as they pause periodically. Chickens are actually worth catching that way as it's easy and they are worth the trouble to raise. Why anyone would raise rabbits is beyond me, the expense isn't worth what you get from butchering them. And it has been posted numerous times since I started in November 2016.

I dont think you understand, the bunnyhop keeps you in the air in order to stop triggering the AI flight response as often as sprinting on the ground would. Bunnyhopping catches the chicken faster than sprinting. try it and then come back and tell me which is faster.

I have never caught a chicken or rabbit just from sprinting. As for a reason to raise rabbits, well I do it for the leather and the animal fat. I like to have at least 20+ bandages to spam in case I need it.

yeah I think the mechanics with the animals are more of an audio trigger thing rather than a line of sight thing and proximity is secondary.

Yes, something like that. I think its a Proximity Ring and Sprint Bunny Hopping allows you to jump over the Proximity Ring without triggering it like sprinting on the ground would, this gives you the edge to catch the chickens easily.

I understand exactly what it does, and I know exactly how to do it...been playing since November of 2016. I'm saying it isn't necessary to catch chickens as you can outrun them on their third pause, especially if you herd them into rocks and fencelines.

Killing predators is far more efficient on mats for leather and fat. Raising rabbits is not at all efficient.

I've done your technique, I used to do it myself, been playing since the day the game was released. But I find it easier, and more efficient to Sprint Bunny Hop, because no ammo is wasted and I have more time before I need to get the Chicken or Rabbit home. I also dont have to waste energy trying to herd a chicken into rocks or fences, it usually takes me 10-20 secnds to capture a Chicken using my technique.

As for getting mats from Predators, thats a waste of ammo and no Predator can compare to raising 4 Chickens to level 10 which gives you the best result especially when it comes to animal fat. The fat from 4 lvl 10 chickens can fill the bar for conversion to oil.

Well, considering the 'bunnyhop' is basically taking advantage of a game mechanic I'd imagine it might get 'fixed' one day.

I never waste ammo on chickens or rabbits...except for a few rabits on a hardcore new start in the first few ingame days only.

I rarely chase a rabbit for more than 20 seconds...just have to figure out their patterns.

Yes, of cousre lvl 10 gives you the best result...but I have so much spare biofuel it fills an entire crate on nearly all of 5 SP profiles and 3 solo MP profiles so needing more is really not an issue. In fact I've never had a shortage of biofuel at any stage of the game and I've never raised rabbits for it, so not sure why you'd find that an efficient means.

So you admit my method is better then yes. Great. conversation over. There is only so much conversation to be had with brick walls.:steamsalty:

*boggles* How did you possibly get to the conclusion that I admitted anything about what you said was "better"? I never once claimed shooting a rabbit or chicken was at all efficient, which is why I don't do it but under a rather rare situation. And I certainly don't agree that raising rabbits is an efficient means of acquiring biofuel. I think you're the dense one here.

For what it's worth, I think Zuleica was being helpful with his posts. Your comment about conversations with 'brick walls' - why on earth did you post that?

I found that if I corner and chase the rabbit into the river/stream the rabbit slows down considerably and I'm able to grab it. Works for me anyway.

It might be easy for you to catch chickens this way. It is not for me. No it is not a practice thing. It is a coordination thing. Arrows are cheap in my estimation.
