Fire (build it first, but don't start it until nightfall)
Kelp (blueberries are good too, but kelp is more of a sure thing)
Chickens
Bow
More small game meat (chickens especially)
Shelter
You'll find find that in the early game fibers, nails, and sometimes feathers will be in short supply. Just keep searching a large area each day and make sure you keep a few of each (as well as fire starters) in reserve at your base just in case.
One more note, DO NOT try to kill any large game immediately. Save your bullets for emergency protection from wolves. Once you are established you can start real hunts. Also note that hunters will start to spawn 3 days after building and setting your base control unit so don't build set it up until you are ready for that.
Edit: Gameelder is right on all points by the way. I think you can survive as long as you keep your veggies up and the easiest way is to dive in the ponds and lale. As for the fishing rod I guess I wouldn't normally go for it early and Gameelder is pretty spot on on his "to do early" list. BUT... You definitely can play the way you want to. If you camp on the NE side of the lake it would put you close to kelp, clams, sandstone, the mine (once you get scuba equipment), and within decent running distance to three Grub trees. You need the grubs to make fish lures or whatever they're called. Sorry... having a brain fart there. :P
And also... happy hunting out there.
1. The rod and tackle are expensive to produce compared to bow and arrow.
2. Each fish caught (or tackle lost) will cost cordage and grub. Early on it can be hard to get both of those things.
3. Fishing can take a long time and early on you need to spend that time gathering other resources.
I DO, however, recommend you make the rod within the first 2-3 days. Fishing is your 'meat of last resort' because it is safe to get even at night. This is also a good reason why it is advisable to build your base on the edge of water.
Also, if this is your first play through, I STRONGLY recommend building near the big lake. It is easy to find by just heading EAST until you see it and when hunting for resources it is a clear and reliable guide post to locate points of interest. Once you are familiar with the map you might try other locations further inland. Personally, I like building with one base entrance leading directly into the lake so you have a secret escape/entrance and a nice safe place to fish from.
These should help train your brain:

Every time I start a new hardcore profile, I make the fishing rod before I make the bow.
Once you get the hang of it you can do fine on hardcore with either a bow or fishing rod first. You can even get by fine without either by catching chickens.
This is how I started: First Priority: Survive!!!
I avoided any confrontations with wolves, bears and cougars. No hunters, Easy mode. I was constantly on the move between crafting the getting the basic necessities, always scavenging.
1.) I chopped wood, went from tree to tree, got as many logs as I could (25 is a good start)
2.) As I went from tree to tree, I was on the look out for Containers, Fiber and plants. I kept everything I found.
3.) MADE A CAMP FIRE::
a.) Used a log to make 2 sticks,
b.) Combined with 4 logs= Crafted 1 Campfire.
4.) MADE A FIRE-STARTING KIT:
a.) Used 2 sticks (made from logs), 2 Fiber Plants and one Biofuel, (Biofuel is made from 4 Medicinal Herbs or found in crates)
b.) Combined to= craft 1 Fire starter Kit.
Kept Camp Fire and Fire-starting Kit in my inventory for nighttime use, so I don't freeze to death, at night I cooked food and purified (boiled) dirty water. I need more logs to feed the fire so it doesn't go out.
5.) MADE A HUNTING BOW AND ARROWS:
The crafting recipes are all listed on the right side of the inventory display. I shot arrows into a tree for practice, they are retrievable from trees and wooden structures or if stuck in the ground. Small Games Arrows will be destroyed if I hit a rock or shoot an animal.
6.) HUNTED CHICKENS AND RABBITS WITH BOW AND ARROWS:
I Killed them but didn't butcher them until I was ready to cook them. Aim slightly above the chicken. I can catch chickens by chasing them and picking them up, but I was never good at it. A dead chicken or rabbit remained fresh for approximately 28 to 30 minutes (real time) in the inventory before turning into a rotten dead chicken.
For my vegetable needs, I dove for kelp (I monitored my dives (blue bar), made them short so I don't drown) in the ponds and lakes, and picked veggies off the ground.
I did this for 2 to 3 in game days before even thinking about starting to build a base. It took me about that long to get the resources I needed.
