I realize the end product from rabbits, I did experiment with them early on. However a high quality meat is not as good as a liver which require a single shotgun shell. So for two shotgun shells I can get more protien, the same cloth and a lot more fat than all of the food and water I have to dump into the coop to get that rabbit to lvl 10.
Chickens however provide 7 eggs, the same two high quality meat, the same fat and about 7 premium feathers now...which are extremely valuable. The only thing you don't get is the cloth which can easily be had from killing two rabbits with a bow.
I can only think of high quality fur for the cold winters, if CG creates seasons.
I am still thinking of crossing the freezing mountains to discover other regions :-)
Or just for the night so you don't have to sit infront of the woodburner to keep your hands warm :-)
After reaching level 10 the differences are more prevalent. Level 10 chicken will produce 2 quality meats and so will the rabbit; however, the rabbit quality meat is just below that of a cooked liver, about 15-20% more nutrition/protien/hunger than the level 10 rabbit meat. On average I get 3 fat from each, so no real difference there. L10 chicken provides premium feathers for higher grade bow ammunition, L10 rabbit on average provides 3 cloth for me.
Both animals have benefits and they're fairly equal in consideration. If I'm doing more plant boxes I concentrate on having a couple of rabbits to ease the burden of fertilizer. If I'm getting low on superior arrows I'll raise a single chicken. I never raise more than 2 animals at a time though. The only exception to this is if I have a level 9 animal closing on 10 and I want to get ready to replace it because I still have need of it's particular output resource, then I'll add the one extra animal in for no more than a days period.
Currently I have no need of premium feathers so no chickens raising atm. There is always a need for cloth though for bandages, first aid kits, making new weapons and upgrades for various items. Also remember that just because some animals can drop liver/cloth doesn't mean they will, it's RNG. I've killed 5 wolves straight before and only got a liver on the last 1(needed it for an antidote). I've also killed multiple animals and not received cloth before.
Instead of looking at the rabbits and saying they're not worth it, think of them as a guaranteed outcome instead of random chance. It depends on the effort and resources the player wants to expend in different areas.
Edit for new test run:
After looking at the old notes the above post was based on I decided to check this again today. I sampled at 5 minutes, 10 minutes and 20 minute intervals for each.
Food and water usage almost identical, rabbit may take about 5-10% more water over time. Note this isn't 5-10% of the bar, but rather 5-10% more than the chicken which would equate to about 2% on the bar, so insignificant.
The biggest difference is feces output, which it looks like the rabbit is only doing about 20% more now, not double. Not sure if this is part of a change directed at the animal raising or the result of a game wide nourishment adjustment for the upcoming build. We've had about 3 updates on the experimental side in the last 2 weeks that no one has seen notes or information on.
