As far as the port not being open etc. I have checked that and the port is indeed visible, so I'm not sure what the issue is here to be honest.
I must admit I haven't read everything but I've tried lots of different things. Constantly refreshing does not help. For the recrod the only thing I'm trying to do is run with my son behind the same router (same IP for obvious reasons).
Both of us despite forwarding the entire spectrum of Steam ports can not just the 27015 can never see the other.
I've also played other Steam games like Creativerse and not had an issue. Again port forwarding is not the issue do it all the time from a NON-STATIC IP. Yes I've heard this is an issue, but it's not for my router. It knows to adjust to whatever the IP is based on the computer connected to it in the router software
I'm from Canada using a Bell 3000 router (forget the exact name) on a Bell Canada network.
Again I know they are working on it, but hosting a server for 5 years that REQUIRES port forwarding. This is not some kind of other issue on my end that I can tell.
This game is great and I look forward to the ability down the road.
No worries, and I'm sorry I haven't gone through all the forum posts. In the meantime I think Cold Games is doing an awesome job and I love this game in single player. As I've heard the strugle is real, and I'm still having lots of fun and plenty to do.
If however you are untrusting of unknown gamers ... and I don't blame you ... there is allot of good information in this thread on getting this done. The problem is that there isn't just one hurdle to get over (e.g. port forwarding) there are cable modems,, firewalls, ISPs, etc. and you have to set each level up accordingly.
I DMZed my router and so did my friend.
We tried about 30 times with no luck, despite seeing each others hosted-game we couldn't join. Then we tried one more time and my friend could join my game.
We played for 6 hours.
Then we took a break. We didn't turn off anything and didn't change any config, then we tried to play again. No luck, we tried a couple of times again but we give up.
We had our windows firewalls disabled, we ended up by-passing our routers so no DMZ or port-forwarding needed, we had our antivirus disabled but still no luck.
It seemed just random that we could join 1 out of near 50 times
i had the same problem both me and my GF have this obviously were on the same network done the same as above and i managed to join her game once not changed anything and can't see her at all it seems to be completely random the ability to join a local host on a lan and a direct connect option as that should allow a complete bypass of the ingame browser would be most useful and provide better connection ability
Just for claiification to others...
First, you didn't put your router in a DMZ ... you put your computer in a DMZ created by your router. Steam is managing the connections (via port 27015) so a DMZ isn't really needed here. That is, in a very literal sense, you shouldn't put your computer out in the street for anyone to access.
Second, even though you didn't change anything ... something obviously did change. Perhaps your leased IPs expired and were renewed with different values than those set in your port forwarding rules? Did you check to see if your firewall turned itself bcak on? Some only allow for times disconnections. Are you runing wireless connections? Do you really know what internal IP (should be something like 192.168.1.###) your computer is connected to?
The bottom line is that one of you must host a game, and that person needs to have their port 27015 forwarded so that Steam knows you are active and disceminate that information to othres. You also need to make sure that any software firewalls are allowing the client applications to communicate. Simply turning them OFF is an unnecessary risk.
For me things started working when set my software firewall to allow UDK.EXE to make external connections and then disconnected my second NIC to insure all traffic was through a very specific IP to my computer. Not sure if it maade any difference but I also added port triggering for the same port. My whole system has been rebooted/restarted repetedly and I'm still able to host games.
You are totally right. That is the correct definition, thanks for clarifying the topic. I know about the dangers of using DMZ, disabling firewalls and things alike. I just was trying to reach that point where you get the thing working, and starting from there you begin defining more strict rules. But couldn't reach that point :(
I agree that something must have happened.
Let's start over with a more simplified scenario. What do you think about this case:
I have a modem (literally, no routing functionality) connected to a router, and my pc connected to the router through cable.
In this scenario I disconnected the router and connected my pc (having only 1 NIC) directly to the modem. So the NIC of my PC had the public IP and no port-forwaring (or related things) were needed. I turned off windows firewall and disabled all avast's shields.
Then hosted a server for subsistence. My friend could see the server listed (<50 ms ping) but couldn't join.
In my friend's Launch.log, the relevant line said:
Log: Pending connect to 'steam.90111810203370498/ColdMenuMap?Name=Player?Team=255?Password=sape' failed; Your connection to the host has been lost.
Seeing that i'm suspecting something related with timeouts, but i really don't know.
With this same setup, i tried:
Hosting a dedicated server for Killing Floor 2 (i think it uses the same engine as Subsistence) and my friend could join without problems.
Hosting an Insurgency listen server and my friend could join through ip direct-connect without problems.
Do you see something i might have oversighted?
Wouldnt it be easier to let others know how you solved the problem?
I'm starting to wonder if there isn't something going on with Steam? All things being equal, you can connect now but not later, it appears that your system is allowing the connection at one time but not alother. I recall reading that others are having similar issues.
Now this is pure speculation but perhaps there is some limit to the number of connections that Steam allows for a given game at any given time. I am aware of similar issues with UNET. I don't know if this is the case and will have to do some research (hopefully the DEV will chime in on this soon). That being said, recheck everything as I've listed before...
1) ISP ... make sure they are not blocking Steam (or other associated ports). Some Businesses and Schools block these connections (either full time or on a scheduled).
2) Cable Mode ... make sure it's not actually a router. Make sure the IP being issued is what you think it is.
3) Router ... make sure you don't have any conflicting settings. Make sure the firewall is enabled if you are setting port forwarding rules (i.e. the firewall enforces the rules). Make sure that the port forwardig rules are set for the IP your computer is actually assigned.
4) Software Firewall ... make sure that the game (UDK.exe) is allowed connection to the internet.
Again, a phone call to the technical support numbers for your hardware can go a long way to making sure everything is setup optimally.
I have been randomly been able to join games, but the game I have in multiplayer is not able to be seen by others. I have done all the suggested things, I have contacted my ISP Nothing on my side should be blocking anything from working. My point still stands though, if it is not easy to do then much fewer people will play the game. Hosting games at the personal computer level seems to be an issue and if this game were hosted on some server that all could log to then it would be much easier to do. I know he is a single individual and probably not able to afford a service of this nature without charging more for the game. I personally would like the game if it were hosted in such a manner and easily accessible. I would also be glad to pay more to have such access. Not sure if someone can partner with him and provide such a service for a modest fee but that might solve the issue.
