My friend can see my game in the steam server browser as IP, but with game status <not responding>.
He cannot see the game in the ingame browser at all
Tried connecting via IP using the console, still no connection possible.
Gonna give this one to you Outlaw... nicely said...
Very good info and why it's not on the normal release and is only in the experimental branch for testing. Now I did some research last night and found that unity games seem to have this issue and it's not just subsistence. I will add a use at your own risk to the top of the guide😃
I mean, if that is the case, ill just ignore MP for now, get plenty of enjoyment out of SP anyway, and wait for that.
P2P is just...well, bad when it comes to mp lol. Its such an old thing. I havent had to do P2P hosting since Diablo 2 lol.
Yeah, its great as a starting point, and to test stuff out, which is why this is in experimental, but I dont see it being the end version of MP for the game.
At least I hope not.
And there you have it.....
We just solved why nothing we did worked for me Critical....
I checked, and my ISP(Charter/Spectrum) uses IPv6....
FFS...Now I feel like a complete fricken dunce for spending so much damn time trying to fix a problem that I was never going to be able to fix...
EDIT: I bet if a lot of the people that cant get this to work contacted their ISPs and asked them if they were on IPv4 or IPv6, they would find that they are on IPv6.
Like....that would make so much sense lol. Would certainly explain why so many more people cant host than those that can.
EDIT EDIT: I connect to my IPv6 modem with a router that supports dual stack (IPv4/IPv6)...but no matter of port forwarding is going to let people on IPv4 systems join on me....because my modem is IPv6 only...
What a PITA
EDIT: So it will work if the other person is using IPv6?
Well there you have it. I also have Spectrum internet and can't host, my friend that I've been trying to play with can't host either and is also on spectrum internet
No clue. I did however read an interesting thing I can try as a last ditch effort. I can setup my computer on my router to use DMZ, and set a public IP address for it.
Not sure if this will do anything, as putting a machine on a DMZ would be the same as just turning the router's firewall completely off....which I tried lol.
I also found this handy site that can test all sorts of things, but more importantly, can tell you what service is running on the port you tell it to test, if any are.
https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?rh1dkyd2
Im on my laptop at work right now, but I will be using this site extensively, and maybe DMZ, to see if i can tell my router and modem to ♥♥♥♥ off and let me host a damn game.
The really funny thing is, Ive been the host before on games like MW3, with the proper ports forwarded, and with UPnP turned on, both which gave me an open NAT type in those games.
But....do all that for Subsistence...and nothing. Maybe its IPv6, which supposedly still allows IPv4 services to connect to IPv6 machines, or maybe the port is already being used by steam for another game....no clue.
Will test more when I get home on my main computer.
Hmmm. So, now I wonder how many people have Spectrum, that cant get MP hosting to work. Critical, do you have Spectrum as your ISP? 10 to 1 says you don't lol.
If that is really the case, that the problem is not Steam, not our computers, not our routers, but is in fact caused by Spectrum running as only IPv6, then the only real solution would be for CG to re-code it to at the very least use both, if that can even be done.
It would likely mean that people with IPv4 ISPs would still not be able to connect to IPv6 hosts, but the IPv6 players would at least be able to host for other IPv6 connections.
In the end though, Spectrum says this on their website about their IPv6;
So basically, us IPv6 users can connect to IPv4 hosts, proven by me being able to connect to Critical (whom I suspect is on IPv4), but we can't host for IPv4 users.
