How to Port Forward - Players wishing to HOST
Warning: Only the host needs to do this and you are doing so at your own risk..... this message will self destruct in three seconds ....1....2....

At this time this only works if your uisng IPv4. If your ISP is set up for IPv6 it most likely will not work for now. Thanks FistMaster & Warm Fuzzies for this info.

I'll try my best to assist players experiencing issues. Players wishing to host will need to port forward the steam port 27015 (you may already have this port forwarded for other games). Also please note that everything is a work in progress, so I'll be working though issues that players experience. I'll post once the build goes out. Thanks!

ColdGames is the man and is trying to get the update out soon but you might need to check a setting or two to be ready:

This port should be open already as it is required for steam use:

Required Ports for Steam
Which ports do I need to open on my router or firewall for Steam?
To log into Steam and download content:

------ > UDP 27015 through 27030 <-------
TCP 27015 through 27030

FYI - I had the test fail and it still worked. So if the test fails just try to host a game as it might work ;-)

Now let’s check if you are good to go. Anyone of these sites should tell you if you ready. Please know your IP address first:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/15291/windows-find-pc-ip-address

Or

Just type "what is my IP" in Google... lol :-)

Now go to one of the below sites:

http://www.portchecktool.com/
https://networkappers.com/tools/open-port-checker#.WdZctGhSyUk
http://canyouseeme.org/

If your test was successful your port is open :)

If not here is what you do it in windows 10 (older windows down below):
Source: http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-3114787/open-firewall-ports-windows.html

Open firewall ports in Windows 10

You can manually permit a program to access the internet by opening a firewall port. You will need to know what port it uses and the protocol to make this work.

1. Navigate to Control Panel, System and Security and Windows Firewall.
2. Select Advanced settings and highlight Inbound Rules in the left pane.
3. Right click Inbound Rules and select New Rule.
4. Add the port you need ---> 27015 <-----to open and click Next.
5. Add the protocol UDP and the port number into the next window and click Next.
6. Select Allow the connection in the next window and hit Next.
7. Select the network type as you see fit and click Next.
8. Name the rule something meaningful and click Finish.

You have now opened a firewall port in Windows 10!

@Warm Fuzzies, no you shouldn't need to forward 7777. The only one needed is the steam port 27015 UDP.

If you're port forwarding on your router/modem, make sure the IP you're forwarding to matches the ip of the computer you're hosting on. You can check this by running the Command Prompt and typing "ipconfig" on your hosting computer.

The internal ip will show as IPv4 Address, and will be something like this: 192.168.1.#

For older windows you can find the information here: https://www.solvps.com/blog/how-to-open-ports-on-windows-server-vps-or-dedicated-server/

You may need to make this change on your router and here is that info:

https://www.wikihow.com/Set-Up-Port-Forwarding-on-a-Router

_______________________________________________________________________

Please make sure you open the port/ports in your antivirus, windows firewall, windows defender, any peerblocker or add blocker software and router if you have them.

Ok now restart both your COMPUTER and ROUTER (just in case it's needed) then go back up and check to see if it works.

If all this did not work it might be your antivirus and you can look it up on their site or try here as it is where I have gone before in the past:

https://portforward.com/

________________________________________________________________________

(IF YOU’RE HAVING ISSUES YOU CAN TRY AND PORT FORWARD 27015-27030)

(OR YOU CAN TRY THESE 27014 - 27050 AS IT ALSO WORKED WHEN THE ABOVE DID NOT)

_______________________________________________________________________

IF ALL OF THIS FAILS YOU CAN TRY THE FOLLOWING:

--------------------------------- > DANGER WILL ROBINSON !!!! <-------------------------------------

Only for a few minutes you could do the following.

1) Turn off Windows firewall (and any antivirus firewall) on the computer

2) Turn off the router's firewall and try hosting the game.

Can we see your hosted game?

3) Turn on Windows firewall

Can we see your hosted game?

4) Turn on the router's firewall and turn off the windows firewall

Can we see your hosted game?

5) Turn on all the firewalls to protect your computer/network (MAYBE RUN A VIRUS SCAN TO BE SAFE)

This way you will know if it is the:

Modem/ISP/STEAM (With all firewalls off we can't see)

Computer (windows firewall on and we can't see)

Router (Router's firewall on we can't see)

This way we narrow it to one of them and can focus on getting it set up right.

I am happy this update is coming soon and will try and help CG answer your questions. I would rather he spend his time adding to the game ;-)

Sorry if it's hard to follow.... first time writing a guide.... I'm better on video.... (I think) ;-)

so I have my router firewall disabled, port range 27010 to 27030 udp and tcp forwarded to the pc, firewall rules set in windows for both protocols on 27015 incoming and outgoing across all network interfaces, both steam and the udk.exe have been added to the firewall with full incoming and outgoing permissions.
My friend can see my game in the steam server browser as IP, but with game status <not responding>.
He cannot see the game in the ingame browser at all
Tried connecting via IP using the console, still no connection possible.

Ok the router fairewal is turned off now turn off the windows firewall and try an host a game and tell me the name I'll let you know if i see it.

Added portforwarding to my router and firewall (inbound and outbound). It's working now and someone joined my server. So HAPPY.

Sweet glad ot hear it

I have not see my friends , 27015 is it necessary?

A brief caution here people messing around with port's and firewalls can cause much harm and heartache we have them for good reason clearly there is a networking issue with this game and I for one am just going to wait for it to be fixed properly the other hundred games I have co-op and multiplay work just fine, the problem is not your pc or router people it's the game and if your running other multiplayer steam games like myself your pc will allready have 27015 enabled and forwarded opening a million other ports is not a good idea and not safe. Very good info and why it's not on the normal release and is only in the experimental branch for testing. Now I did some research last night and found that unity games seem to have this issue and it's not just subsistence. I will add a use at your own risk to the top of the guide😃

Turns out I'm on DS-lite IPv6 with my ISP, so i'll never be able to host games with the current system.
Warm Fuzzies™ Oct 8, 2017 @ 10:33am
Didn't CG say somewhere that the plan is to eventually have dedicated servers down the road?

I mean, if that is the case, ill just ignore MP for now, get plenty of enjoyment out of SP anyway, and wait for that.

P2P is just...well, bad when it comes to mp lol. Its such an old thing. I havent had to do P2P hosting since Diablo 2 lol.

Yeah, its great as a starting point, and to test stuff out, which is why this is in experimental, but I dont see it being the end version of MP for the game.

At least I hope not.

And there you have it.....

We just solved why nothing we did worked for me Critical....

I checked, and my ISP(Charter/Spectrum) uses IPv6....

FFS...Now I feel like a complete fricken dunce for spending so much damn time trying to fix a problem that I was never going to be able to fix...

:steamfacepalm::steamsad::steamsalty:

EDIT: I bet if a lot of the people that cant get this to work contacted their ISPs and asked them if they were on IPv4 or IPv6, they would find that they are on IPv6.

Like....that would make so much sense lol. Would certainly explain why so many more people cant host than those that can.

EDIT EDIT: I connect to my IPv6 modem with a router that supports dual stack (IPv4/IPv6)...but no matter of port forwarding is going to let people on IPv4 systems join on me....because my modem is IPv6 only...

What a PITA

Well not good news but we now kown..... so it was in fact the IPS. Will update the guide.

EDIT: So it will work if the other person is using IPv6?

Well there you have it. I also have Spectrum internet and can't host, my friend that I've been trying to play with can't host either and is also on spectrum internet

No clue. I did however read an interesting thing I can try as a last ditch effort. I can setup my computer on my router to use DMZ, and set a public IP address for it.

Not sure if this will do anything, as putting a machine on a DMZ would be the same as just turning the router's firewall completely off....which I tried lol.

I also found this handy site that can test all sorts of things, but more importantly, can tell you what service is running on the port you tell it to test, if any are.

https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?rh1dkyd2

Im on my laptop at work right now, but I will be using this site extensively, and maybe DMZ, to see if i can tell my router and modem to ♥♥♥♥ off and let me host a damn game.

The really funny thing is, Ive been the host before on games like MW3, with the proper ports forwarded, and with UPnP turned on, both which gave me an open NAT type in those games.

But....do all that for Subsistence...and nothing. Maybe its IPv6, which supposedly still allows IPv4 services to connect to IPv6 machines, or maybe the port is already being used by steam for another game....no clue.

Will test more when I get home on my main computer.

Hmmm. So, now I wonder how many people have Spectrum, that cant get MP hosting to work. Critical, do you have Spectrum as your ISP? 10 to 1 says you don't lol.

If that is really the case, that the problem is not Steam, not our computers, not our routers, but is in fact caused by Spectrum running as only IPv6, then the only real solution would be for CG to re-code it to at the very least use both, if that can even be done.

It would likely mean that people with IPv4 ISPs would still not be able to connect to IPv6 hosts, but the IPv6 players would at least be able to host for other IPv6 connections.

In the end though, Spectrum says this on their website about their IPv6;

Originally posted by Spectrum:
Connectivity to IPv4
While IPv4 cannot support the growing address needs of the world, it's not going away immediately. We've ensured that all Internet connections through our network are capable of reaching both IPv4 and IPv6 content and that our end users have access to both.

Dual Stack
We use a "Dual Stack" implementation. This means that IPv4 and IPv6 run at the same time at the network level. This approach minimizes customer impact.

Transition Technology: IPv6/IPv4 Compatibility
IPv6 is not "backwards compatible" with IPv4. This will be unnecessary once IPv4 is decommissioned, which is likely to happen in the future. In the meantime, transitional technology will be used to make IPv4 and IPv6 work together.

So basically, us IPv6 users can connect to IPv4 hosts, proven by me being able to connect to Critical (whom I suspect is on IPv4), but we can't host for IPv4 users.
