S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat

Footsteps and Gunshots are muted
I recently reinstalled COP and to my surprise when I got into a firefight I noticed my gunshot sounds were at a much lower volume then what they should be, also my footsteps when walking/running are completely silent. I checked my drivers, they are up to date. I didnt have this problem the first time I played COP. When I walk through water or bushes I can hear those sounds but anywhere else its just silent. I know its not the worst bug but it does break my immersion. Ive googled this and there doesnt seem to be many people with this problem and the one thread i could find suggested that I find the system.ltx file and edit the sound values from there....problem is i cant find it! I could find every other .ltx file but that one.

Please help! Im almost done with Claer Sky and I want to start COP as soon as im done, I might even try out Misery.

Not sure how that could be, if the game has sound for other things working ok.

If it is through Steam, verify game cache for CoP.

Double check your audio settings in Windows Playback/Recording Devices.
Ensure the speakers are setup, based on speaker setup; i.e. 2.1, 5.1, etc.
yeah its pretty frustrating, and yes its through Steam. I tried checking my speakers and its all good on that end. I just dont understand what could have caused this if im using the exact same setup as the first time I played COP, absolutely nothing has changed.

so i guess no one knows what this is? or how to help? i just want to hear my footsteps, i can deal with the gunshots being half muted

You didn't answer the question: Did you verify the games cache files? They might be corrupted.
Also what setup are you talking about, a laptop or a desktop. Make sure your systems audio settings match the ones of the game. If you have more than 2 speakers try setting your sytem to stereo instead of 5.1 and see if it changes anything. The system.ltx normally is in the configs folder.

the last guy didnt ask a question.. Desktop, 2 speakers. Ive made sure the audio settings on the game and my computer are the same. I disabled EAX in the game to see if that would work, nothing changed. Ive looked all through the directory in Steam under CoP for system.ltx and i cant find it. the only .ltx files in there are fsgame.ltx and user.ltx. thers no config folder in the CoP folder. Even if i could find system.ltx i have no idea what to do once i do find it. Im not familiar with this type of stuff. So hers what I see when i open the CoP folder:
folder: _appdata_
folder: bin
folder: directx
folder: helpers
folder: levels
folder: localization
folder: mp
folder: patches
folder: resources
VDF file:(numbers) _install.vdf
LTX file: fsgame.ltx
Readme
CoPexe
LTx file: user.ltx

thats everything i see, now ive looked in each of the folders ive listed and i see nothing that relates to what i need to find, or maybe i just dont know what im looking for. as far as the system.ltx file, its nowhere to be found, i even ran a search.

If you need any other info let me know, thank you for the response

oh and the LTX files are shown as a blank white page icon, is that what it should look like? I havent opened it because im not sure what it will do.

Alright, the ltx files are merely collections of settings. You can open them with wordpad or the editor, no harm as long as you don't change anything and then save. The system.ltx is in gamedata/configs which is not present at yours as you haven't installed any mod. In the vanilla game these files are packed in the recources files.

Bad Motha didn'T ask a question but he asked you to verify the games cache files. I asked you whether you did so. So? Did you verify them?

If you don't know how this is done: Right click the game in the library, select "properties - local files - verify integrity of local files" It's gonna take some time to check and if there are corrupted files steam will redownload them.

Also are you running Steam and the game as Admin?

all files were succesfully validated. took less then 5 min. and Im pretty sure i have everything running as admin. If the game cache files are fine then what could it be? this just doesnt make any sense to me.

Ive been playing CoP to see if there are any other sounds or bugs that have happened as well, but the only other thing i can notice is after you sprint and run out of stamina he breathes really heavy, thats completely quiet too, but i guess that ties in with why the footsteps arent making any noise.

STALKER might not like your sound device, what sound device (like realtek hdaudio) do you have and between which can you choose in the games sound menu?
Some people have had problems with the openAL sound driver. Try and update your OpenAL driver.
The Hurt Shoulder Sep 13, 2013 @ 3:42pm
ive updated the drivers for my soundcard, which i believe is an onboard soundcard. not entirely sure tho. in device manager it just says: HD Audio Device twice. as far as the openAL driver, how do i find that and update it? ill do some more looking in the meantime to see what my soundcard/ sound device actually is.
The Hurt Shoulder Sep 13, 2013 @ 7:02pm
okay so all it says for my soundcard is its made by microsoft and High Definition Audio Device. It says it twice, but the PNP device ID is different. I dont know what that even means but im gonna guess its an onboard soundcard?

you mentioned that Stalker might not like my audio device, the only thing is, is that SoC and CS didnt have this problem. and ive played CoP on this PC before, the only difference is that i had to reinstall Win7 a few months back because something happened to my PC. But ive got it back to the way it was before i had to reinstall Win7. if you need any other info let me know

Are you sure it's EXACTLY the same as before? I'm saying this because maybe you had some other OpenAL-game installed before STALKER back then, one with a more up to date OpenAL version. Try to find a rather new version of OpenAL and install it.
The Hurt Shoulder Sep 30, 2013 @ 8:03am
where do i look to see if i have OpenAL installed? Im pretty sure its the same, i have all the same games installed on Steam as before. I dont have any other games off of Steam either.
