Cannot drop the Rail Gun

I have read about this issue in other forums where you get stuck with the rail gun which you can't drop, can't trade so you can't finish things in Pripyat.

Is there a known patch for this bug?

One recommendation was to start over. I don't want to do that. I tried going back a few saves, but I always end up with the rail gun stuck in my inventory once I pick it up.

You can just change your carry weight I guess to account for the railguns weight. Or you can change it to a non-mission item to make it droppable? Are you sure you still don't need it for a mission?

You cannot drop the "railgun" (it's actually a prototype Gauss Rifle, notable by the coils around the barrel, and the barrel itself) since it is a quest item. The only way to rid of it is to complete the mission where you get the weapon (and maybe another mission, I don't remember), and talk to Garry or whatever your translation named him, and ask to head back to Skadovsk. If you don't happen to have enough , you can head to the Jupiter area for free (from Pripyat only) to make some large amounts of to head to Skadovsk. Then go bug Cardan about it and do his mission. Once you complete the mission, you will get a properly working model which you can drop at any time, give to an NPC for no reason, or do the exploit with Hawaiian if you made an awful choice and have the Friend of Freedom achievement.

Lol it's 2023 and this still helped me. It didn't give me a missions marker to go back to skadovsk so reading this helped me tremendously. Maybe next time I'll read the dialog a little better.
