Its a hard subject and example. The mod is very impressive. It runs well but its ambitions overcome its limited x-ray engine. Anomaly is ok as a free roam survival mindless game but have you ever tried anything ambitious? Such as say taking on the whole entire Yanov outpost full of 50+ stalkers, freedom, bandits and duty as a Monolith or Merc or even Bandit?
Such an undertaking would be extremely profitable and intense and would be a logical mid game or even end-game objective. Yet its impossible because the engine cant possibly handle that many NPCs at once lol and the result is crash crash crash.
So Anomaly can offer exploration, action, mindless progression either through the half baked stories or wealth and gear. Which to anyone who has every played and or beat the original games or even some of the old story based mods, absolutely nothing to explore. We know all the maps inch for inch, We have been in battles that make anything in Anomaly look like a complete joke (ending to CS, Misery road to Pripyat, The descent and final lab in SOC. FFS even the first time in the agroprom underground in SOC beats everything Anomaly has to offer.
So yes it looks good, it runs good, unless you dont try anything too ambitious and its completely lifeless. Which is not a stalker experience. The zone is a place that demands respect and many people find solace in different experiences or materials.
To me the zone is mortality. Its about masochism in a way and extreme immersion. We all go to the zone for different reasons and stay for different reasons. Anomaly doesnt have much repeat value because it offers no satisfaction in the long run. It is a good mod tho and its fun to mess around in.
Honestly, something came to my mind when you talked about the Aproprom underground in SoC.
Playing ShoC with Autumn Auora was such an intensive, immersive experience that not even Dead air, nor Anomaly could give me. Free roaming? Sure they are fine. Still, they could not trigger the feelings i had when playing ShoC with AA2 or Misery.
Guess ill download AA2 right now and give it another permadeath run.
There is no better alternative, but what Anomaly is doing sucks so it's the best at being bad. Item bloat for the sake of it, "HARDCORE" gameplay that's literally just cranking up numbers to make them unfair... gotta be a masochist to enjoy that garbage.
I like the item "bloat" as you call it. It makes the game more immersive. Not everything you find is supposed to be helpful. I also like more variety on items that do the same thing. If you only care about functionality go play an excel spreadsheet.
which isn't a quality exclusive to anomaly, believe it or not
that stems from misery
which is funny given that miseryfags won't shut up about how boring and easy anomaly is when you leave it on default settings
as in, in order to make anomaly difficult you have to actually consciously choose to crank all of the settings up
I'd much prefer Anomaly for its Engine if not for it being more arcade than satisfyingly challenging for my own personal taste. I'd switch over in a heart-beat if that mod had adopted Dead Air's more unforgiving overall mechanisms opposed to Anomaly's currently more forgiving "and casual friendly" mechanisms ("even when on its most hardest of difficulties").
I must admit that even regardless of my own preferences Anomaly is certainly not just another "trendy & overrated" mod. This trend of Anomaly does indeed hold some weight that makes it a worthy enough experience to try out at least once. I wouldn't turn it down purely because of its popularity as I believe it is somewhat warranted given Anomaly's own given perks.
Edit: Just played Anomaly for a second time and allot has changed since I've last played it years ago. Anomaly is now much better than Dead Air however I'd still prefer if it had included some of Dead Airs more minor details that doesn't break away from its immersive mechanics like how it deals with radiation (drinking vodka to make you immune pre-exposure "what!?") and how mutants don't bleed from bullet wounds.
I'd say now with full confidence that Anomaly is (now) a pretty solid game and that the hype is perfectly justified. Addons only make it much more enjoyable and the game hardly crashes as frequently as Dead Air does.
Later it was CS, didn't feel perfect, but still, back to the Zone is like coming home.
Got CoP, thought there's to be more, found Lost Alpha, okay, but didn't satisfy me.
Dug deeper into mods to figure out what people favoured, of course there're lots of opinions.
Tried CoC first, then Anomaly and stayed. Finally all maps in one game.
Met lots of NPCs, they're all dead now; let's drink to them once more, they were good stalkers......
Actually everything went as planned. Great Entertainment
