In scripts, this item is referred to as "conserva" which is generic slavic name for any canned food, usually spam.
I can see the connection as in 'to conserve' and like how that is the chosen word for the programming.
The in-game model looks like cans of roast beef I can get here in the US which I used to eat a lot
I find the similarity in foods interesting. Such as pate which is popular and also comes in all rations that I've seen. Here in the US we have something similar called "potted meat" which is a form of pate. It's also eaten the same way; usually on bread or crackers. Although you never see it in US military or civilian rations, which is strange because its extremely cheap and will basically last forever
I tend to eat most of my food from a can, box or pouch since I'm used to travelling a lot. Some times I'll break out some canned food while playing STALKER for added immersion
