For focused experiences I would have to defer to others, but I've heard that True Stalker and Spatial Anomaly is good.
There's a lot of mods that reinvent the OG games or have their own story. Other will most likely provide their insights as I'm still new to the different mods myself.

Mind giving a small explanation of each one?
Most mods for Stalker are great, and despite many being machine-translated, you'll still have a lot of fun with them. In my opinion, the ones you should absolutely avoid are those based on Misery, as they're usually bloated with 'no-fun-allowed' features added to the game solely for the sake of realism. I mean, just imagine how fun it is to actually have to loot individual bolts just so you can use them to travel safely around invisible anomalies, or having to swap batteries for electronics like your PDA or night vision, or even worse, not being able to carry food with you because radiation keeps spoiling your kobasa.
Misery, anomaly, basically every mod that people can't stop gushing over are extremely overrated. There are tons more out there that not only accomplish much more impressive things than those mods, but have many unique aspects too.
If you're looking for something specific let me know. Mods about zombies, mods about cut content, exploration heavy mods, less shooting more talking / wandering mods, short one sitting mods, extremely long filled to the brim mods etc.
Just ask and point you to the right direction.
Also there's always Call of the Zone for the sandbox play. Dr. X, before his passing, made CotZ to give his version of a sandbox mode with his quests and whatnot, and it is one of the most similar to the OG games out of any of the Call of Chernobyl / Anomaly ones.
As the others have said though, unless sandbox is your cup of tea (Mount and Blade, Dwarf Fortress, etc.) those experiences won't retain your attention for as long as a proper story based mod.
...but yes, 95% of Stalker mods can be easily installed by finding them on MODDB and following the instructions.
Repair and upgrade cost a lot but you can easily make a lot of money with mission.
PS : Stalker 2 will be a mess, people should to stop having hope for a game that was continuously pushed back for half a decade, if not more. Two exemple of game that did this are Anthem and Duke Nukem Forever.
The game will come out when GSC believes it is ready. It will be good, or it won't.
