How to use the scanners?
I got two scanners I can use in my left hand, but they don't seem to do anything. How do I activate them? Also, how do I switch from holding the scanner in hand to not holding the scanner in hand? So far I am doing this by opening inventory and dragging the scanner to its slot, but there must be a better way?

Tap the key (whatever it is in setup menu)for the scanner IIRC.

The O key is default for detectors once they are in the slot.

And it depends on the scanner.
The Echo scanner only shows proximity to artifacts and lights up and beeps when near them.
The Bear scanner shows you the direction of the nearest artifact.
The Veles scanner has a screen showing you the artifacts as green dots in relation to you.
The Svarog scanner does the same as the Veles but also adds the exact location of dangerous anomalous activities and shrinks the size of the artifact dots to their precise location.

Each tier of scanner also increases the amount of artifacts detected, with Echo only detecting lowest tier, and Svarog detecting all known artifacts.

You must be in an anomalous area to find artifacts, they only spawn in set positions around the map. You'll never just find one in a random spot. Anomalous areas are marked on your map along with other points of interest (bases, notable structures).

Actually, they can spawn outside of anomalies, as i found out some time ago. In Call of Pripyat each location has a dozen of preset paths on which artifacts can spawn and slowly "wander".

No? They spawn only around anomalous areas. Some anomalous areas are loosely defined and the artifacts can go a bit from the "area" as it is marked, but you're never going to find an artifact just next to Checkpoint in Yanov, or out in the middle of the fields.

They do all wander around anomalous areas, yes. They "wander" in that sense. But they cannot spawn outside of those areas.

There are a few unique artifacts that are tied to quests or points of interest, such as Joker's Kolobok in the Oak Pine nest, the altered set of artifacts for Beard and the Scientist questline, the Heart of the Oasis and the Compass, but other than specifc, one time spawns, all "normal" artifacts cannot spawn anywhere but inside anomalous zones.

I've always preferred the Veles over the Svarog because the markings of the anomalous fields makes it harder to see where the artefacts are. I know there are dangerous areas already and the bolts do the job of guiding me. In vanilla CoP and with some mods you can get a Veles from a stash in Yanov at the start of the game which makes artefact hunting and the cash rewards much easier. The SGM mod is an exception because the maps are full of anomalous areas and mines so that makes something like the Svarog detector very useful and the SGM mod adds new detectors to deal with it. Or you can disable it which I ended up doing. The Bear detector can be used if you don't have a Veles but I've never lasted more than five minutes with an Echo.

What i said is true, wandering artifacts is an actual feature of Call of Pripyat. The exact type and max amount of artifacts is defined in these files:
gamedata/configs/scripts/zaton/anomaly/zat_wa_anomal_zone.ltx
gamedata/configs/scripts/jupiter/anomaly/jup_wa_anomal_zone.ltx
gamedata/configs/scripts/pripyat/anomaly/pri_wa_anomal_zone.ltx
If you have you gamedata unpacked - open those files, set max_artefacts and respawn_tries to 100, sleep for a couple of days and start running around the map with a detector in your hand, see what happens.

I amend my statement, you are correct. But it is exceedingly rare. Never seen it personally happen, though its evident it does.

I've found them in nowhere places too.
