Won't Launch

When I try to launch CoP, the box you see when you launch pops up and stays there for about 3 seconds then dissapears and the game doesn't launch. I haven't gotten to play. The only mods I have are complete and atmosfear 3. My computer exceeds system requirments so that shouldn't be the issue. I tried running as administrator with xrEngine from the game directory and i deleted both user.ltx files (i read somewhere that that should help). Everything I try fails. I have no problem with any other game i have, only CoP.

I also reinstalled a bunch of times, still didn't work.

Well then I can think of one of two possibilities. First off, when you remove the game from steam, go to your steam library folder ( google it if you aren't sure how, dw it's not complicated ) and look for a call of pripyat folder. Steam usually ( these days ) will delete the folder regardless of modified content but there's no harm in checking. If there's still a call of pripyat folder there after you've removed it from library, delete it. If that's not happening, what version of windows are you running? Windows 10 has an issue running games that aren't dx9 or newer and you may have to download the binaries from microsoft's website. You could also theoretically force a later dx version but that's a bit more technical than you may feel comfortable with.

It's possible to change the dx version in the ini file for the game as well I believe if that is indeed the problem you're having. When I switched from 7 ultimate to 10 pro I had the same issue.

Could be your two mods conflicting or improperly installed. You got a dev to reply to take his advice. It is common sense to boot up the game vanilla and make sure everything works before trying to mod the game. Windows 10 us notorious for hating video games.

Meant uninstalling it. Like I said it's possible steam isn't actually emptying out the gamedata folder when you uninstall it, if that's not the cause, it's a dxd9 issue with windows 10. It's an easy fix just google " windows 10 dx9 fix " It'll be a download from microsoft directly so you won't have to be paranoid about any shady links, but make sure you're actually fully uninstalling your mod files THEN re downloading CoP.

My knowledge of complete's structure is limited but it's 100% possible atmosfear is incompatible. Complete for Call of Pripyat isn't like the other complete mods for the other games, it was never fully finished and caused a lot of issues on its own. If you wouldn't mind re downloading the game one last time try this.

Before you uninstall right click call of pripyat in steam and click properties. Go to local files and browse local files.

Now uninstall the game as you would normally, then refresh the window you opened that led you to the call of pripyat folder. If there's something there, delete it. If not, you're good to go.

Re download the game, launch it, then see if it plays nice ( if not bear with me it's process of elimination ) If not, you're looking at the dx9 thing I mentioned earlier. If it DOES launch, my guess is that complete and atmosfear 3 don't play nice together.

Don't fret however because we can test this too.

Complete comes with an uninstaller which you can access through your control panel, so...

Install atmosfear 3 and then launch the game, do NOT install complete yet! If the game launches, you have your culprit.

If you want to make 100% sure we're correct in this, install complete, then launch it again.

Most likely you'll get a crash here, if so, don't panic, just go to your control panel and run the uninstaller for complete, sort by date if you're having trouble finding it.

Then reinstall atmosfear to make sure there are no files missing from that.

Original Weapons Renewal will do what you're looking for and still provide a vanilla experience without the hassle. I believe it's also compatible with atmosfear 3 ( just checked and yes it is )


Don't be disheartened by this! Confusion is the doorstep of understanding! You'll learn from this and figure out how to troubleshoot such issues ( if any ) you have in the future and you'll be better off for it. Anyone who knows their way around this stuff was exactly where you were when they first started. Hang in there, a modded stalker is 100% worth it!

Wanna add for anyone else searching, after following Draescans original instructions I also had to turn off cloud saves to fully remove old mod files. Then it totally worked.
