Any way to kill a controller? MISERY mod
I'm trying to get to the heli in the iron forest. I fought my way through 2 phantoms/psy-dogs, 2 bloodsuckers, 5 zombies... then a controller showed up and rekt me lol. So I went back to previous save and this time took my rocket launcher along with me. Shot him in the face with it and he still killed me. >.> any tips?

Once you pass out, they wouldn't eat you ... OK
I too find mere 'ghosts' just an annoyance. IIRC CoC has introduced damage, even from the hallucinations, which is much better.
The only damage in CoC from psy fields (aside from the instant kills that are the emitters) is from the hallucinations, which have to actually strike you, and are avoidable. Those I'm fine with. An AOE resource waster, not so much.

I mean, if I had a choice between smoking weed to not take damage, or having to run away from phantoms, ill take the weed.

It's not that you can use consumables to get around it, it's that you are forced to. That, and I don't like the idea of being forced to ingest narcotics to survive in a game. Especially when the negatives aren't really modeled in a signifigant matter.

What do you mean? You get really sleepy and get the munchies. It's actually kinda risky.

And you're not forced to. You can always just stand far away and shoot them. There is a threshold where you don't take damage.

And it's misery, im always hopped up on cocaine and morphine. Those are really modeled poorly tho, my guy should have had like 100 cardiac arrests by now.

I never use or need narcotics, alcohol, or smoke in MISERY and never have any trouble avoiding damage from Controllers or killing them. Having choices doesn't make you take one or the other. I don't eat unclean food either, I never have a need to. They are all play style choices.

So you just never take damage from anything? I mean you have 6000+ hours in the game, but like, bleeding is a serious concern.

Everyone has their own preferred tactics. We try to keep options open for all kinds, but still leave things much less easy than vanilla. I avoid being shot at almost all the time. I don't hunt mutants because I don't eat unclean food. So, I avoid most of them or deal with them from a prudent distance.
Before anyone starts thinking I am on the team, so know all the 'secrets', I had well over 1500 hours playing MISERY 2.0/2.1.1 before being recruited to the team. So, I simply learned from my mistakes and adapted ;) "Ooof, that didn't work" "What's going on? (read the descriptions of objects) OH, OK, lets try this instead"
MISERY makes tactics that worked in Vanilla like moseying though a fire anomaly picking artefacts like flowers in a rain coat cause minimal injury or wear and tear on your gear cost you more dearly. I used to dash right over and save Petruha as my very first act in Vanilla. Do that in a rain coat, or try to carry a highly radioactive object half way across the map unprotected in MISERY and you will suffer.
There are multiple tiers of objects you can use from cheap/plentiful/heavy to expensive and weighing nearly nothing. I use epinephrine; less side-effects, longer lasting, more weight/stamina boost.
The same thing goes for armor and weapons. I know guys who insist on playing all possible portions of the game in a raincoat for the challenge. If you're the full frontal assault type that will get you pretty dead LOL. If MISERY didn't have classes, I would still play with a Sniper style.

Apologies for hijacking the thread and getting off topic ;) I welcome questions on ModDb and prefer to answer them there where a much larger non-Steam crowd can also benefit.
Ah, well the psy-fields they make aren't whats kiling me. Whenever I get close to the iron forest, it is almost like it senses my presence. Even crouching and approaching from multiple directions has it turn and make a bee-line to me, then it puts its hand up and I end up upside down and teleported, and then dead.

I think I will just have to come back later once I have some better gear. The particular spot I was approaching from was quite the pickle too. If I opened fire on the controller, I got quickly mauled to death by two bloodsuckers from behind. But if I shoot the bloodsuckers first, then the controller kills me from behind. In addition, it has like 10 zombies surrounding it as bodyguards which makes trying to sneak up close without it noticing pretty difficult.

With a controller, 2 bloodsuckers, 10 or so zombies, and two psy-dogs all in one spot, I tihnk I will just have to come back later, maybe i'll get a better spawn of mutants next time.

Unless someone happens by and clears that location temporarily for you, Those mutants will remain indefinitely. However, the controller can't actually sense you. The zombies under his control can notice you and make him aware (pretend they are reporting to him) There are also usually pairs of controllers; except for the one in the cave in Zaton they are virtually never alone. You can always soften the lot of them up a bit by tossing a dozen hand grenades over the wall :) Once the zombies are gone, the controllers will resume a patrol pattern and you can approach and snipe them from better distance. To me, the IF is one of the more fun locations to conquer. The WPP can be tackled easily a number of ways, but the IF has limited angles to start from. It is way easier to accumulate a half dozen grenade launcher rounds if you can't snipe well. While drawing mutants towards other groups isn't my style, it can be pretty effective. Drawing them into the electro anomaly can be fun sometimes too.

If you got da mony, you can also hire a stalker squad to go there and meat shield the mutants. They are particularly effective against bloodsuckers. Their melee instant kills them.
WAIT. You CAN hire stalkers to come with you? I was jokingly thinking about that earlier, but I don't remember being able to do that in vanilla, and didn't think you could do that in the mod. But some bait... err comrades, would make a huge difference I think.
Also, Ikandrb, you probably already know about it but I found a bug with the controllers attack. If you attempt to quick load or manually load a save while the animation of you being upside down/teleported is happening, it bugs out the game to where you cannot see your gun or open your inventory on ANY of your save files. Only fix seems to be to close the game entirely and go back in.

Setting aside quicksaves, which you should not use, we know about that bug. Saving within the influence of any psy field kills the hud. If your save is bugged, you can lower your alife switch-distance to 30, load the save, exit the area of influence, and save again, then restore your switch_distance to normal (default is 300m). If you expect to encounter a psy mutant, you want to make your CYA save completely outside its influence. Then if you have an epic fail and need to reload, it saves you all that grief ;)
How can I hire stalkers? And also... fml, there are 6 bloodsuckers. I managed to kill the 2 controllers by luring them slowly over a hill and then popping up over said hill and using my rocket launcher... but now I am out of food and meds and running low on ammo. If I flee the area, the 2 controllers will stay dead, right?
Ah and don't worry, even if I lost a save file it wouldn't harm me much. I just thought I would mention it on the off chance that it wasn't well known about yet. I saved like 5 times on the walk from skadovsk to the iron forest anyway lol.
