Yeah I loaded a save from before I started the last quest just to fart around and explore.
And yeah, I missed some sidequests like the bloodsucker lair and the oasis, since they don't really have quest markers.
But wow. I was expecting to have to go explore at least one more lab after X-8. I thought surely, all of this time in yanov/zaton was just building me up to have decent gear for Pripyat...
And like half of the locations in Pripyat you don't even explore, half of the locations in the general game you don't even touch unless you decide to explore them.
Still a great game, just so short.
It's as if they had a bunch of people detailing the town levels (Pripyat, Limansk, and Pripyat again) but the level designers didn't get around to adding any missions, so there's some great architecture and interesting buildings but nothing to do.
See also Stalker: Lost Alpha, which suffers badly from the same problem, except that the maps are even larger.
For those who are looking out for more underground levels to explore, I'd recommend to check out story-driven mods that have restored old levels to their vast (and somewhat empty) glory, like Oblivion Lost Remake or Lost Alpha (get ready to some stupid plot developments that go nowhere in that last one)
Agreed. Pripyat in CoP is the only area where I felt legitimate anxiety going anywhere. Around any corner could be a pack of wild dogs, feel rumbling in the ground and spring for the nearest building, random snorks, etc.
And it's so fun, there's so many really cool buildings and things to explore, but literally no reason to other than sheer curiosity.
X-8 was a cakewalk really, there's all these documents but like... you only gotta grab one to complete the mission, and there's no real incentive to keep searching when you're so close to the end.
Good game but rough with the pacing and falls short alot so this sort thing aint a surprise to me.
The true game is the mod "Call of Chernobyl" in my opinion. I think that's what any CoP owner is missing. "Call of Chernobyl" mod for this game is free for anyone with CoP and vastly way larger in size, with optional sandbox or store-mode (there's even mods for the mod!). CoC is the "real game" in my book, just a vast open world with dynamic NPCs and events, and CoP feels more like a short, linear story-forcused mod.
Just make sure you do the "One Shot" side mission and kill the Merc. That turns the Mercs against you and they will kill you. Much better than the zombies.
Good to know. Thanks
It made the game a 9/10 but just one more long mission after getting to Pripyat would have made it 10/10.
There was just so much unused real estate. The mutated trees running up the side of the building with that glowing green gas? The Theater?
I remember getting close to the end in SoC and emerging in the Stadium when for the first time in that game an RPG rocket fired on the other side of the stadium whizzed past my ears and it was one of the most exhilarating gaming moments I've ever had. I miss that atmosphere in the latter stages of CoP and am surprised no-one has made a mod that can tack on to vanilla or mod that retains the main story and evac/free play that adds a few more missions to do towards the end of the game and adds more incentives to do freeplay. When traders have stopped giving missions I don't see the point in sticking around.
