o: i'll try those, and agree, gunslinger looks freaking awesome
Any hot takes on serviceable Vanilla weapons that are NOT one of a kind special snowflakes like the March? Or "This Assault rifle is so huge that Rambo would think twice!" like the Tunder?
I hear everybody gushing about Strelock's SGI for it's mod capabilities, but the regular doesn't get to do that.
Meanwhile at a glance, the TRs 301 seems nice, but I see nothing but begrudging praise at best. Because it is not the single strongest rifle in the whole game, despite being able to do things the basic SGI can't.
etc.
Or should I just stop worrying so much, and use whatever guns I can get my hands on without an open wiki in my lap telling me "Go to X and do Y for early guns".
Bonus ignorance question: Is there ever a practical purpose to the mod options that change the type of bullet used? I find the idea interesting, but I'm curious to know if it's ever more than a novelty not worth the drawbacks.
It's been ages since I played vanilla COP. I remember liking the G36.
Don't worry about which weapon you pick up in the early game, until you happen on the ones you really like. Most are serviceable enough in the early game (some are useless) in which you are hugely vulnerable no matter what you carry. Finding one you like and realizing what a game changer it is can be one of the great RPG pleasures of STALKER games.
In Misery mod, the different ammo types have a big impact, for sure, on armor penetration. Oftentimes I have wondered why an enemy just won't go down only to realize afterwards that I wasn't loaded with AP ammo. I imagine other mods are the same.
But play the game! It's great!
Still, thanks for the shot at insights for yet another stupid rookie.
Hit the gameshow music!
Rookie Vs Burner Barn.
Step 1: Belated realization I can't take my sweet time avoiding anomalies, because heat hurts. Try again.
Step 2: Get artifact, toss bolt, whoops bolt fell short looks like you cooked your own face off. Try again.
Step 3: "Wait, wait… Artifacts Move?! Oh you mother ****er" Success! Sweet, missing half my health bar success.
Rookie Vs Chopper.
Step 1: Doesn't **** up entirely and gets two artifacts along the way. Pay no attention to the non-fatal gas pocket I walked face first into on the way out.
Hubris levels rising.
Rookie vs another chopper:
"Note to self. Sound meter missleading. Shift button Walking not = crouch walking for keeping ghosts from attacking me." Success thanks to years of expecting petty specific demands of videogame enemy logic.
Hubris levels rising.
Rookie survives his first emission.
Hubris levels rising.
Rookie is eaten by magic dogs on way to finally visit safe haven boat. Making a note for later. Dogs > Ghosts. Knife fighting less spooky dogs to death with no issue was probably a factor of yet more hubris.
"His last words were 'I don't need a gun for dogs' "
So. Not as bad as I thought things would go from the reputation of people ragequitting within five minutes, but not exactly a start to be proud of either.
The one the other guy is pointing at you. That's always the best gun. Ouch.
"Oh it's a bunch of shambling guys? Must be zombies or something-" And then the rookie stalker learned that everyone saying this game is nothing like DOOM was a filthy liar about one of the most important details people forget about that game.
In DOOM, zombies also have guns. Should have remembered I have binoculars-I mean, trusted my instincts.
Though at least they are pretty slow to raise those guns, compared to lazy good for nothings so bad at being Stalkers they need to try and steal boat steering wheels from the rookies.
In the middle of the night. Before I have nightvision. Picture two sides of idiots failing to shoot eachother for three minutes.
This game certainly has a way of making me feel like I'm not the biggest idiot between failures. "Well, got myself an artifact no prolem, and the detector says that's it. Oh hey, more stalkers slowly approaching the anomoly. I guess I'll say high-oh wow. one of them walked face first into an anomoly amost immediatly. Fiiiiine I'll save him."
Are there going to be any NPCs left after a couple days? I won't always be around to rescue people with medkits when they rub their faces into the boiler or two boars are too much for three stalkers with assault rifles.
(Yes I'm playing on Master, I did at least read up on that detail).
