Cannot run the game / xrEngine.exe - bad image

Game cannot even start and gives me xrEngine.exe - bad image error : C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\d3dx9_42.DLL is Either Not Designed to Run on Windows or It Contains an Error

Tried reinstalling, tried downloading d3dx9_42.DLL from the web, tried compatibility mode. Nothing works. What's funny that this game works fine on my laptop

PC specs:

Windows 10
8GB RAM
Rx 480 4 GB
i3-6320

i dont even have such a folder..

guess that means game has not run long enough to create one. if that's a windows error msg, did you look in the windows event viewer? might be a windows event that could help narrow down the problem.

yes but i cannot pin point the correct event..

error code 0xc000012f

cant be that many windows logs/application events that occurred at the same time you ran the game.
win 10? = try the reliability monitor and look for the red X's

cannot find this even/issue on reliability monitor.

go to the game folder and run it from there (do NOT use play from steam). same error msg?
should be bin\xrEngine.exe

i've tried that.. sometimes directx install would pop up... and after that the same message.

that is odd. "?sometimes? directx install would pop up" directx is either there or it isnt.
try going to ...\steam\steamapps\common\Stalker Call of Pripyat\directx
and run dxsetup as admin.

i did in the past.. now it doesnt... and i did that.. even downloaded a different one from the web, tried removing the file which is "giving the error" and installing DX.. same thing happens

Featured Levels: 11_0, 10_1, 10_0, 9_3, 9_2, 9_1

same driver model version, featured levels also the same.. i have even 12_0...

seen this before on other games. when there are problems installing a directx dll, program exits. no error msgs. no events. a few users have managed to uninstall all the directx versions then reinstall them from 9 to 12. long shot - copy the d3dx9_42.dll from your laptop to the bin folder where the game is. some games look in the local folder first for a dll then in the system folders.

just did.. problem remains the same..

i'll do an experiment, i'll download a pirated version and see if that works...
