The vanilla experience is basic for all games
Hey, I can´t hold your hands, so do as you think. Why do you even ask then? :D
If you like challenge, you got to be sure that Misery is a big change from Vanilla game, and more difficult.
Two tips though:
One: Artifacts Need lead containers as they emit radiation at all times. As you can imagine, these boxes are Heavy and so are the artifacts themselves, ussually bringing the weight up to around 8kg-12kg per artifact. Its impractical to carry a lead container While you are just out hunting mutants. So really, only carry these around unless you are *specifically* artifact hunting.
Two: Getting your carves from a kill is essential to raising your income. Some people say you should cook it first, but honestly, that extra income never made a difference for me, the costs of cooking fuel and all.
lol
The Complete mods (look on moddb for them) make the base game a lot nicer, and have a few difficulty settings that are good (i.e.: all humans that die in an emission turn into zombies), plus the Wish Granter if you are having some issues (I only use it to get the third set of tools for each technician a bit early, fix quests that have gotten mixed up, and occasionally get rid of rainstorms (though not this playthrough as the storms make it interesting sometimes), but there are a ton of things you can do with it).
Misery is a lot easier (i.e.: tough as hell, rather than fracking impossible) once you are familiar with the game. Also, there is a LOT you can miss if you are not thorough, and Misery makes it difficult to be thorough, so...not for your first try to be completely frank.
Also Pripyat is the third game, so you might want to play them in order, though I do think Pripyat is the best game of the three. You may also like the Lost Alpha if it is still available, which basically totally rewrites Shadow of Chernobyl into a totally different game. It was done entirely by modders. There is also a mod called Stalker Soup that is interesting, but a bit quixotic. I believe you can get it for free with the SoC game included, since GSC (who made the Stalker games) released the source code for public use (iirc) as well as gave permission for basically anyone to do anything they want with the Stalker franchise. Not sure about that last bit though because I have also heard that Bethesda/Zenimax bought some sort of rights to Stalker...that may be rumour however.
