This is how I did it with Predators. Vanilla, no mods.
The first season, 8th place expectations. I immediately hired a designer and two mechanics, both having 50% refueling perk. One of the mechanics should have a "high" Pit Stop rating to allow you to find/hire a better pit crew mechanic, prep, and have a better pit crew as you progress along your first season and at the start of the second season.
Optional hire new drivers if you want during the first season, but $$$$ is tight. Do hire a Pay Driver for a reserve driver as you progress during the season. Focus on developing your car for next season. In the first 3 to 4 races, you might finish 9th or 10th overall. It's ok, do not panic. Once you have the 50% refueling perk 4th - 6th place will be your typical result or even first (possible with Ardennes). Also, during this time, ask your chairman for extra money for the season.
Suppose you have sponsors ending after the 8th, 9th, or 10th race. DO NOT GET SPONSORS and save them for next season. The reason is below, drivers. You will get BETTER SPONSORS!
By the 9th or 10th race, focus on performance to max parts performance for next season carry over. Also, around 15 days before the final race, scout 3-star drivers with high marketability because you should be capable of meeting all sponsor achievements for the second season.
In terms of politics, make sure you have enough money for it. Vote in for Spec Engines for the next season if RNG is on your side for that season, vote in for Spec Gearbox. This will make the second season easy mode lol. HOWEVER, the most important and bare minimum rule is to have the Spec Engine rule for 2017.
With this foundation in place, winning 2017 is piss easy even if your car and driver are 4th - 6th best for both Predators and BYOT. Also, you can use the same team line-up to winning APC if the spec engine and refueling are still in place because the pit strategy is the same as ERS. If that's the case, continue upgrading your factory because you need that reliability when you enter WMC.
