At first yes, i was able to select the Reserve driver if i First selected the main driver i wanted and the reserve driver second.
A few more seasons later, potentially because i have 2 drivers with reserve contracts ( from promoting a reserve driver )
Now i am unable to select drivers the way you describe.
Martin Misser is my driver for car 1, if i select him he will pop into the car 1 slot. Toby Collins drives Car 2 now, he doesnt appear in any slot if i have him selected. My reserve driver also doesnt appear in either positions if i have him selected.
This also means i can select Driver 1 and my reserve driver, and when i get to practice the game gives me Driver 1 and Driver 2, not my reserve driver.
All that said, yesterday i managed to somehow glitch the game and have Toby Collins in both cars for Practice.
Yes Toby Collins had somehow cloned himself and was driving 2 cars for me at practice. This was rather annoying since my #1 driver, Misser, has 19 feedback.
So your tip can work, but its not fool proof.
I just rotated them around by promoting my reserve driver 3 times: reserve replaced 1, 1 (now reserve) replaced 2, 2 (now reserve) replaced the reserve (in position 1) and, voila: my #2 driver became my #1 driver, leaving my reserve as my reserve again, and I can run my reserve in practice to replace my formerly #1, now #2, driver!
This resets mechanic relationships, but the +/- of being promoted/demoted should all balance out I figure? It makes sense to do if, like I do, you always replace one driver with your reserve (I have a pay reserve driver who also has a higher feedback score, so that works out!)
