Estimated laps for tyres
If the game tells me tyres will last for 12-14 laps what does that actually mean? Is that the number of expected laps until they hit 25%, or the cliff, or 0%?

Also, how much does it take into account? For example, will it account for smoothness, the track, perks? Does it assume driving with normal (yellow) aggression?

It'll mean that after 12-14 laps your tires are completely gone judged on neutral driving style.

Driver smoothness is implement

Thanks for the answers. I tend to change tyres at around 20-25%, so I have to remember to take a bit off. If it states 12-14 and I'll be driving with neutral aggression, I'll actually pit after 9-11 laps.

This is why I keep getting it wrong.

It accounts for things like smoothness and possibly chassis rating (can tell by comparing tyre longevity from year to year, given all other stats remain the same except for chassis tyre wear). I don't believe it gets updated when you select mechanic skill like light footed, so that's probably not factored.

As for lap count I think it might based on how many high, medium, low band laps you have on that tyre which means the % would be the cliff point.

The amount of laps the game indicates is pretty optimistic. You generally want to deduct a couple a of laps from the minimum amount (with long races) the game tells you the tyres will last.

Yes, I think the OP is correct in saying that the estimate assumes the tires run out at 0%, which as a race manager isn't something I agree with.

They're still useable at 10%, you just lose a ton of time. I had one of my drivers 0% her intermediates because on those, she was still faster than those on slicks around her (track was drying but imo not dry enough yet for slicks so I didnt pit her yet and the 60kph pitlane meant more time lost than gained pitting for new tires).

As a race manager I don't want to lose a lot of time. Typically you pit before 10% and thus typically they don't last as long as advertised, because (I think) it assumes you'll be wearing them down to 0.

in my experience those numbers are only accurate if you can maintain optimal temperature. if you need more aggresive settings in order to keep the temp up you can easily subtract 2-4 laps from the prediction.

I am actually checking tyre wear and temperatures during practice sessions. It works pretty well to calculate the number of laps your car/drivers will be able to perform during the race. If tyre wear is 5% per lap I am planning no more than 15 laps per stint. If at the same time temparature gets hot on push level, I know I will have to re-balance with yellow, even green push levels duirng race, which will lower the average tyre wear allowing a couple more laps.
I tend to pit slightly before 25%, but in any case never beyond 20%. I believe beyond 20% you start losing too much time.

At 0%, I lost far more time than would have been taken up with a safe pit stop. Live and learn! Tires that have worn off completely remind me of Goggles Paisano.
