Why was this hated so much?
I haven't played Outlast 2 yet. I know everything (story wise) but have no clue how to play. All I know is there is some new features in the cam recorder. But I've seen so much hate for this game. What were some of the reasons some of you didn't like this sequel? Should I buy it on sale?

Don't buy it on sale. A lot of people claim to dislike how many chase scenes there were in the game, but the large amount of them makes sense for the theme of the game.
Another reason people dislike it is because they think hiding is no longer an option in this game. The truth is, these people are just more used to the hiding mechanics in the first game and thus result to running through each section, which is also a perfectly viable strategy.
Personally, this game is my favourite horror game in a long time and I completely recommend buying it, even for full price.

I completely dislike this game.
It has way too many chase sequences, a very cheap and unfair AI, no memorable main villain etc etc etc.
Heck, you won't get the story if you miss ONE note. Seriously, every other note is basically uses so if you manage to miss this one very important note you are basically screwed.

I, personally, would advise you to buy this game on sale...or not at all to be honest.
But you shouldn't listen to other people, watch some gameplay videos and see for yourself. If you liked the first one you are, probably, going to like this one as well.

Hey, summer sale is close so just wait for that.

Hey, guys, look... the cumulative reviews for this game are 'very positive'. Why is this game so widely hated?

Was there any like rare easter eggs and what not? Besides the notes, recording, and documents? :odoc::ocam:

I'm about half way through. I discovered Outlast about 2 weeks ago and played the original Outlast and the Whistleblower DLC for the first time, blind from any reviews, loved both of them actually. So much so, I was looking forward to a graphics leap with Outlast 2.

I got my graphics leap alright, very beautiful and pleasurable scenic look. However I hate the story and the bloody chase scenes... Would be nice to not get those every few minutes of play and wondering where the heck you're supposed to go. I hate it being dark most of the time. Would have been awesome if the developers introduced a daylight scene somewhere, even just for a break. The school scenes were a welcome break from the hillbilly cult madness which seems to go endlessly on and on... and on.

Personally I like to explore a lot. I love checking out all the nooks and crannys and enjoy the attention to detail put in by some very hard working folk. But honestly, the batteries really limit my ability to do that. As it's so very dark, 95% of the time, you need the night vision to see where you are - And obviously the batteries for the night vision run out quickly - So it's impossible to explore at all - You really have to just get on to the next stage as quick as possible.

Don't get me wrong, I love the scares and the horrific gore - Full marks for that, but there needs to be some balance and variation. I hate to say it, but I actually preferred the original Outlast and its DLC. The storyline is better, the characters are better and memorable. Being in a haunted asylum seems to be more fun that running around in the hillbilly wilderness.

Just my tuppeny worth (2 cents worth to you Americans)!

I liked this one better than Outlast one, but there were too many chase sequences and too many bugs. I paddled my boat outside of the map 4 reloads in a row. Also the ending seems a bit full of itself.

I've just finished Outlast 1 and am onto the Whistleblower. While I found the ending of the first one better, and am THOROUGHLY enjoying the DLC, I HATED the "turn on two switches while Chris Walker rips your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ head off" scenes. They become repetitive and annoying, providing WAY more trial and error than I experienced in Outlast 2.

I can report back having completed the entire game now.

Some nice touches, including the raft guiding and I thought the ending was nice - I did like the school visits and going back in time with Jessica as a child. Spooky.

However, a lot I found immensely frustrating. As what everyone is saying, too many chase scenes for sure. It would have been nicer if there were gaps where one could explore in beautiful surroundings - It needed an escape sometimes. Even serious films have a comedic 'break' or character that gives them a break. This had nothing like that.

As I said before, because it's dark all the time, you need the batteries a lot of the time and this limits curious exploration of the areas, something I really enjoy in playing these games.

Also because it's so dark, you sometimes end up in areas where you haven't got a clue where you should be going making gameplay deeply frustrating, especially when reset after reset you have a chase monster running after you. Is this aspect 'part of the gameplay?' Perhaps so - but I don't find anything particularly challenging about scrambling around trying to find an exit in the dark by sheer fluke whilst being chased by an NPC, dying 15 times in the process only to begin the chase again... It just gets dull.

Final word: Cut the chase scenes by at least 50% and introduce some other challenges instead whilst providing some 'reward break' - (maybe a scene or two in daylight?), and a couple of memorable "boss" figures (with some back story) would have made this game outstanding in my view.

!-SPOILERS-!
--------------------

I disliked Outlast 2 mainly because of the plot and lack of character development. The mostly nonsensical notes were also not helpful.

I understood the plot, got what was happening, but I did not like it. The jumps between the main setting and the school is frustrating and immersion breaking, and the last 30-40 minutes of the game felt rushed and lacked depth. The plot builds itself up, and then poof, Val dies (which you do not get to see), Knoth freaking just kills himself, the wife dies 5 minutes after you finally find her, turns out she never was pregnant and everyone is simply crazy, and the main character ends up losing his freaking mind completely and utterly. All in the span of 20mins!!

And the villians were not properly fleshed out. You get very, very little backstory on them, to the point that only Knoth is actually important to the story, Martha is only a obstacle (same with the big guy and the small guy on his back), and Val only serves to lengthen the story then gets thrown away.

But I loved the setting and the atmosphere. They did great with the graphics and the lightning. Very scary. Can't wait for the DLC and Outlast 3.

For me I don't care for the story (kinda) I just care for gameplay. So hopefully future installments are dlc (or maybe even a multiplayer) will be better but I have yet to play so....
