When he 'catches on fire' use the Focus "e" to stun him out of it, or you will take damage when you attack.
Valrvn is a more complicated fight, and the method I prefer here is to parry in the instant of their attack. If Valrvn or the 'warriors' are in smoke form, use Focus to make them hittable (though if they are parried well, then they can be hit too). I didn't use dodge in this fight.
Later fights use a blend of both of these techniques.
