Question about spending free time/missing out on things?
Hey everybody,

I'm thinking of diving into this game after seeing an hour long Let's Play on Youtube, and wanting to experience it for myself. I want to ask though, in the free time sections you're basically given free reign with whom you want to spend it. As the premise of the game is that people die, does this mean you will miss out on BIG stuff if you missed out on spending tiem with a character that dies soonly, like, valuable knowledge, gameplay mechanics or skill points, or are these just silly side stories that don't matter too much if you miss them?

Í don't want to use the replay chapter feature if possible, because I would get bored fast then I think so I want to focus as much on 1 playthrough and main story without missing much.

Thoughts?

I'd say there are no must-have abilities, especially because THH's class trials are the easiest compared to sequels.

However, almost everything that affects Focus Gauge would be considered top tier, so:
  • Neural Liberation (Kyoko) - The Focus Gauge decreases more slowly during concentration and Fever time.
  • Menacing Focus (Celeste) - Increases the Focus Gauge by 5.
  • Breathing Technique (Sakura) - The Focus Gauge recovers more quickly.

Some useful utility abilities to go along:
  • Tranquility (Sakura) - Completely steadies your aim.
  • Raise (Celeste) - Triples the number of Monokuma Medals in school, increases by 10% during Class Trials.

If you often find yourself struggling and losing lots of HP, get these:
  • Envious Influence (Byakuya) - Increases the Influence Gauge by 5.
  • Imagination (Hifumi) - The Influence Gauge recovers over time during concentration and Fever Time.
  • Crystal Prediction (Yasuhiro) - Decreases an argument to three statements or less (meaning less Truth Bullets to choose from in each argument).

So, yeah, something like that. I'll link the guide anyway so you can look up all other abilities and decide for yourself:

FTE's serve as a means to learn more about characters you like and to get more skill points, as well as specific abilities.

By learning more about the characters I mean that FTE's basically give you some insight on how this particular character thinks, why he/she acts the way he/she is, what are his/her ideals and morals and whatnot. There are no major plot points, so you can just stick with the characters you like the most.

Otherwise, if you really care about getting certain abilities, you can use spoiler-free guides to see which character gives you which ability, and spend time with them until you get it.

Or you can ditch all of them and go into class trials "naked", that works too.

Thank you, that makes much sense. Is there any abilities you would recommend that are a must, or have a guide that shows the best in a non-spoiler way?

Without spoiling, there is one character who you get locked out of if you don't do their report card before the end of chapter 2 who doesn't die. Afterwords spending time with them just waists the time slot. Chapter 2 unlocks the second "half" of their report card, but locks out the 1st.
