By learning more about the characters I mean that FTE's basically give you some insight on how this particular character thinks, why he/she acts the way he/she is, what are his/her ideals and morals and whatnot. There are no major plot points, so you can just stick with the characters you like the most.
Otherwise, if you really care about getting certain abilities, you can use spoiler-free guides to see which character gives you which ability, and spend time with them until you get it.
Or you can ditch all of them and go into class trials "naked", that works too.
