The slime hutch can be a money maker. The slimes they drop can be turned into eggs which sell for 4 digits. Petrified slime sells for a profit, and you can donate one to the museum. But the ring we get with 1000 slime kills might not be necessary, but it makes it a lot easier.

That said, a shed filled with kegs, jars, or garden pots might be more of a money maker.

Slime Hutch is mostly for fun, but if you're creative you can come up with a design like this that also allows for some profit on the side:

(Note that slime balls appear on any un-floored floor... so the crystal floor in the slime area prevents slime balls from spawning there. As you can see, the slime balls will then spawn outside their pen in the main area where I can access them, and still also reach the watering trough.)

Yes, a Shed is definitely more profitable than a Slime Hutch. Except for producing Slimes and Slime Eggs, Anything a Slime Hutch can do, a Shed can do better. All sheds have a better Interior Area to Farm Footprint ratio than the Slime Hutch, and the Big Shed has more interior area.

That said, if you want to build a Slime Hutch, build a Slime Hutch.

I use the Automate Mod, so I'm a bit less restricted in needing access to objects to use them than wilky's arrangement, and the Slimes don't need to be able to reach the water troughs.
Also, 1.5 lets sprinklers fill the water troughs, so a slime hutch can be even more hands-off.

Shed's definitely a better moneymaker, but the slime hutch is better now. You can fuse the slime charmer ring to another ring, so you don't waste inventory slots on it, and also use sprinklers to refill their water bowls so you only need to check them every few days. So if you check them weekly, you'll get like 450 slime, and be able to sell the eggs for profit. It's a bit of a gamble though what eggs you'll get; the green eggs are worth 1k.

Is there any reason to raise tiger slimes? The purple ones drop iridium and diamonds and coal, but whenever I kill tigers on Ginger Island, they just drop slime and sap... and very rarely, ginger.

To my knowledge, raising green slimes in the hutch gives the same amount of slime as a purple. The only difference is when you breed them outside for slaughter.

Yeah, there's not much need to have Tiger Slimes. The only reason I did it was because they're the most dangerous farmable slimes in the game. Given that the save was far into post-endgame when 1.5 dropped, steady supplies of Iridium Ore, Diamonds, and Coal are not a problem.

So when I discovered Tiger Slime Eggs existed, I slaughtered all the Purple Slimes I had in the hutch and did everything I could to get a breeding population.
