Bean Starter
How do I grow beans? I can't even plant them. I've looked all over online, but have found nothing to help me.

Till the soil with your hoe. Lay down the seeds. Water them.

You plant them like normal crops, on tilled ground.

But they grow on a Trellis, meaning that the tile they grow omn becomes impassable ...
that also means that you cannot place the bean starters on the same tile as you are on (only on the tiles next to you)

Exactly the same way as you would any other crop.

The only difference between beans and other Spring crops is that it grows on a trellis, which means it will continue to bear produce after your first harvest and you can't pass through it (so plant them in a line or leave room to get to planters on the inside of your field.)

Okay thanks I must have been standing on the tile.

The only reason to grow beans is just to fufil a certain bundle. Beans are not profitable.

Because profit is the only reason to do anything in a game about relaxing and enjoying the country life. But seriously, once your farm is up and running, money pretty much stops mattering no matter what you're growing, so this isn't a valid reason not to let people explore the game on their own.

its still strange how crop pricing works in this game. Beans sell for next to nothing, you can harvest only 1 at a time and I believe they only grow back every 3 days. A single Blueberry sells for way higher than a green bean, they are not on trellies, I think they regrow every 2 days and most importantly, you can harvest multiple from the same plant. Its weird.

Yeah, I do think prices could use some rebalancing adjustments across the board (particularly Artisan products). I was just pointing out how silly it is to tell an obviously new player "don't plant this it's bad" when the reason it's "bad" is a subjective non-issue.

That is the only reason I'm growing them.

Actually, Green Beans are one of the absolute best crops you can grow in the first year and first spring. Green beans sell initially at a loss of 20G true enough. However, Green Beans continue to produce up to five additional times through out the season. Green Beans planted on Day 1 will produce a total profit of 180G each or a profit rate of 7.2G per day.

This may seem low as compared to Potatoes and Cauliflower which produce at a rate of approx 7.66G/Day and approximately 7.92G/Day respectively, but the trick of Green Beans is the multiple harvests. Each Green Bean you harvest is worth 9XP towards your Farming skill, and at the end of the season Green Beans planted on day 1 will total 54 XP per plant.

Cauliflower will only produce 23XP and 95G in one harvest, and even if we consider using the profits from the day 1 Cauliflower to grow an additional Cauliflower, we only get 46XP and 190G. And this comes in two discrete chunks at the middle and end of Spring. Green Beans are slower than Cauliflower initiallly, so you get a boost from growing Cauliflower instead, but the steady growth of XP and profit of the following three Green Bean harvests nets you a consistent income of 9XP and 40G every 3 days available throughout the middle to end of the season steadily leveling you up the entire time.

In year 1, only Strawberries are even close to the value you get from Green Beans. and in any other year, Strawberries are by and far the best choice of all the Spring crops.

It is important to note that the longer you wait to plant them the less value they have.

I could be wrong about this, but i was under the impression that you only get exp from the first harvest of multi-harvest crops like green beans and blueberries...if that is the case then your point about the exp weighing is moot...and also, while you make a good point about the payoffs being only two weeks out of the month, you could easily stagger your planting and get some each day for the second half of the month...but i could be wrong about the multi-yield crops, so someone should check on that one...

Yeah, there is a chance a piece of advice from over a year ago might be wrong indeed...

There is also the bean recipe that you use them for.

SeeBartlett, the recent update has of course altered the rankings of crops in terms of their profitability both in terms of Farming XP and in terms of G.

However, what applies to Beans also applies to Coffee (which is by far the new best crop probably beating even Ancient Fruit or Starfruit products).

You are absolutely correct about multi-yeild crops. Blueberries or even potatoes and strawberries give experience for the singular harvest but not the additional yeilds per harvest. That however is different from multi-harvest crops. You get XP per harvest not per yeild, so any time you pull something off the vine you are getting XP; you can check this by various Hex editing methods where you can watch the values of the relevant addresses change. This is also related to the historic bug related to scythe harvesting crops where they don't yeild the XP they're supposed to because farming XP is tied pretty exclusively to the action of harvesting crops.

As such, Green Beans are subtle in their value. Gold wise they aren't good unless you shove them into a Preserves Jar though they are profitable regardless as long as you have two or more raw harvests. XP wise, they're only slightly beaten by Parsnips.

Though growing non-stop Parsnips or even Coffee is arduous and tedious. That's one of the things, I enjoy about Green Beans is that they strike a nice balance between required actions from planting to final harvest. The worst offender but one of the best first year crops if you want to make huge quantities of money and are willing to work pretty much non-stop all year is Hops. Especially with any strategy that involves getting the Green House during first year Summer or sooner. Best if you are doing a keg strategy, but I stopped that after seen how tedious the mining requirements are for that during the first spring.

I've tried dozens of strategies for maximizing Farming XP in as short a duration as possible. Best crop bar none for maxing before the end of Summer 1 is Hops because you harvest every single Hops everyday once it matures.

Coffee is likely better with the new line up based on the doubling rate. A single coffee bean purchased on the 1st Friday and immediately planted can be doubled many many times over before the end of the planting season; Coffee has a two day harvest period which is rivalled only by Hops and which likely beats hops because Coffee is a two season crop compared to the one season of Hops. But Coffee beans yeild multiple coffee beans every harvest which are seeds that can be planted. One coffee bean becomes around four more plants.

So on the 15th, you can expect to plant 4 more coffee plants. 17th, 4 more. 19th, 4 more. So on until your second gen plants yeild 16 beans on the 25th along with the 4 from the original plant. First week of summer, you can end up with your entire field planted with Coffee if you are willing to take the pains to make that happen with a proper sprinkler setup. Definitely can be done mid summer. End of summer at a relatively lazy pace. And I guarentee you'll have max Farming well before you're done with all that.

You can stagger your Green Bean plantings, but it is best to have the maximum number planted before the 1st Friday of Spring 1. You start losing harvests if you plant there after, and there is little opportunity (outside of fishing, and I personally don't fish) to make profit in that time frame to spend on long period crops.

Hope that was all informative.

Bean starter is a trellis crop, its like a normal crop except unlike a normal crop you can't plant it on the the tile you are currently standing because its a trellis crop which prevents you from walking over it.

Regardling profitability.

all the spring crops 'kinda' suck. your main thing for spring is farming XP. so potatoes which cost 50 and have a 20% of doubling, meaning that per 10 potatoes will cost you 500 and get you 12 potatoes which sell for 80 88 with tiller.

556 profit, ignoring star quality over 6 days. 9.26 profit per day per plant.

Parsnips cost 20, sell for 35. 38 with tiller.

18 profit over 4 days 4.5 profit per day.

Cauliflower costs 80, sells for 175 192 with tiller 9.3 profit per day.

so cauliflower is about the same as potatoes. except you can potatoes done in half the time and yields 2 harvests in the same amount of time

farming 6 is 3300 XP
144 cauliflower would be needed.

same amount of work for twice the amount of potatoes would yield more farming XP. (same amount of gold yield though since you can use the first set of potatoes to pay for the second set of potato seeds etc.

the main thing for spring is the strawberries, which even if you plant them on the egg festival cost 100 and sell for 120 132 with tiller x2 harvests. which is 12.6 profit per day.

the green been. costs 30. sells for 40 and you get 6 harvests over 26 days 8.07 profit per day.

would require 62 green been plants planted near the start of spring to reach farming 6. 26 days of watering for 1612 waterings.

1728 for cauliflower

1416 for potatoes

1196 for strawberries.

This is awesome, even just for other saves. Thanks!
